Bronze dwarfs, a 114-metre painting and a man with a lamp
Everything here except Centennial Hall is a walk from the NFM car park. Give the Rynek an evening and Ostrów Tumski the hour after dusk.
1. Start with Papa Krasnal on Świdnicka
The first bronze dwarf, Papa Krasnal, went up on ul. Świdnicka in 2001. The tourist office now counts over 600, and every website gives a different total. Don't chase the number; buy the dwarf map and let it steer a slow walk.
2. Walk all four sides of the Rynek
The Rynek is a full square of gabled houses around the Gothic town hall. From 20 November the Christmas market fills all four sides, so I'd see it bare first.
3. Give Panorama Racławicka an hour
The painting in the Panorama Racławicka rotunda is 114 m long and 15 m high. Tickets are 50 zł. It's open daily 08:30–19:00 until 31 October; from November it's closed on Mondays.
4. Be on Ostrów Tumski at dusk
Ostrów Tumski has almost 100 gas lamps, and a lamplighter lights them by hand every evening. The city keeps renewing his contract. Go at dusk.
5. Take the tram to Centennial Hall
Centennial Hall is on the UNESCO list, and the Multimedia Fountain beside it puts on free shows in season. If you drive, the car park is 6.50 zł an hour at weekends.
6. Shop the market hall before Sunday
Hala Targowa is open Monday to Saturday 08:00–18:30 and closed on Sunday. Go on a weekday morning.
A cellar that claims 1273, and a working market hall
1. Order pierogi and żurek
Pierogi are filled dumplings, boiled or fried. Żurek is the sour rye soup, often served in a bread bowl. Between them you've eaten Polish.
2. Drink the house beer at Piwnica Świdnicka
Piwnica Świdnicka sits in the town hall's Gothic cellars and brews its own beer on site. It opens at noon Monday to Thursday and at 11:00 the rest of the week. I'd go for one beer and the vaults, not for a long dinner.
3. Fill a bag at Hala Targowa
The stalls at Hala Targowa are a working market under one roof, not a souvenir arcade. It's shut on Sundays.
4. Skip the Rynek terrace menus
Prices on the square buy you the view. Walk a street off it.
A Christmas market, a price rise and a summer fair
1. Book early for the Christmas market
From 20 November 2026 to 7 January 2027 the market covers the Rynek, Świdnicka, Oławska and plac Solny, daily 10:00–21:00 with holiday exceptions. Zones A and B still charge every day, so I'd use the NFM.
2. Budget more from 1 February 2027
The council has voted new kerb prices. Zone A goes to 9, 10.50 and 12.50 zł for the first three hours, then 9 zł: four hours become 41 zł instead of 29.
3. Watch for the St John's Fair dates
The 2026 fair filled the Rynek from 22 May to 28 June. The 2027 dates weren't out when I checked.
