Nobody stops you driving to Hallstatt. The village does it for them: two barriers close the centre, and the operator's own page says visitors have no access to the historic centre by car. Even a guest with a room in the old town leaves the car outside. So the question here is not which garage is cheapest. It is which of four car parks leaves you the shortest walk, and whether you can face the €20 day ticket.
The clock is kind at first: fifteen minutes free, €5 for the first hour, €10 for three to four hours. Day visitors cannot book a space ahead, and nothing I found says who tows a car from the roadside.
Hallstatt: a village you reach by boat or on foot
The train station is on the other side of the lake, so the way in from the station is a ferry: €4, ten minutes, cash only, every day of the year. By car the road ends at two barriers. After that you walk, and I like that more than I expected to.
The photo point at noon, and a €29 ride for a view
I would not stand at the Hallstatt photo point at midday. It is free and it is the postcard, so the groups come all day; in May 2023 the village mounted a wooden screen there and took one panel down again. Go early or late.
My second skip is the cable car on its own, €29, if all you want is the view. The €49 ticket adds the salt mine for the extra €20, which I think is the better deal. Ride only on a clear morning.
Echerntal and the Waldbachstrub, on foot from the car park
Leave the car at P2 and walk the Waldbachstrub waterfall in the Echerntal. The tourist site gives about 2.5 hours for the family route to the waterfall and about three for the themed trail, starting at P2 and returning to P1. I would do it first, before the village, so the car park clock is already running on something worth the money.
Convert the hotel ticket before you leave P1
If you have a room in the centre, park at P1, take the entry ticket, and tell the attendant which house you booked. Then, before the first exit, press the hotel-ticket button on the machine. Skip it and you pay the day-visitor rates. The converted ticket costs €20 for day one, €18 for day two, €12 for day three, €10 a day for days four to seven, €7 from day eight, and the free shuttle carries you and the luggage from 09:00 to 19:00.
Parking in Hallstatt: Four car parks, 15 minutes free, and a step at four hours
The tariff is the same in P1 to P4. It is free for 15 minutes, €5 for one hour, €9 for two, €10 for three to four hours, €12 for five to six, €15 for seven to twelve, and €20 for thirteen to twenty-four hours. A lost ticket is €40. You can pay by cash or Visa and Mastercard.
Walking times, from the operator: P2 by the cable car is one minute from the salt mine and 15 to the centre. P1 is 10 to the mine and 20 to the centre. P3, towards Obertraun, is 40 minutes from the centre, and is mostly for coaches. I found no walking time for P4. My pick for most day visitors is P2 for the short walk; if it is full, P1 is the garage that stays open all year.
Two contradictions. Older tourist-board listings still show a day rate of €18; the operator's 2025/26 price list moves it to €20 from 1 January 2026, so I use €20. And the hallstatt.net arrival page says to book parking ahead, while its parking page says day visitors cannot reserve. I believe the parking page.
The coaches are a different system. Since 2020 every bus needs a booked slot, with at least 2 hours 20 minutes between entry and exit and 20 minutes to unload; the fee is €126 a day from 1 May 2026. A 2019 report put the daily cap at 54 buses; the operator's pages give no current number. Cars have no quota.
Calmer: Obertraun charges €2 an hour, €18 a day, with the salt ship Navia and lake boats to Hallstatt from the lido. Bus 543 stops at Hallstatt Lahn.

| P3 (coaches and motorhomes)Hallstättersee Landesstraße 65, towards Obertraun | Mainly for coaches, which must book a slot. The operator gives 30 minutes to the salt mine and 40 to the centre. Motorhomes: the price list says €20 a day at P3 with shuttle, while hallstatt.net says only the campsite by the petrol station; the two disagree. | No charging listed. |
| Obertraun lots (municipal)Four paid areas around the lido and the Seecafé, with the Navia salt ship and lake boats to Hallstatt | €2 an hour, €18 for 24 hours, coin machines. A calmer alternative, with a boat for the last leg. | No charging listed. |

Towed in Hallstatt: Nobody publishes a tow number for Hallstatt
I searched the municipality's pages, the car park operator's pages (PEB GmbH), the tourist board and the car park listings. None names a tow firm, a pound, an address or a fee.
The company that runs P1 to P4 is PEB GmbH, +43 6134 8255 19; ring it for a problem inside its car parks. For a car missing from a roadside, the ÖAMTC says to ask the nearest police station, and puts an Austrian tow at about €300 on average. I could not verify a police number for Hallstatt, so I give none. Keep the car in the four lots and the question never comes up.
If your car has disappeared
- Who took it
- No tow procedure is published for Hallstatt. The village, the car park operator PEB GmbH and the tourist board name no towing firm. For a car missing from a roadside, the ÖAMTC says to ask the nearest police station
- Phone
- PEB GmbH, which runs car parks P1 to P4 (a car park number, not a tow line): +43 6134 8255 19
- Collect it at
- No pound or address is published. The operator's office, per the official page, is PEB GmbH; that is an office, not a pound.
- Hours
- Not published.
- What it costs
- Not published for Hallstatt. The ÖAMTC puts an Austrian tow at about €300 on average, and a parking ticket at €21 to €50, up to €726.
- Bring
- Nothing is listed. I would bring the registration papers, the insurance certificate and ID; for a hire car, ring the rental company first.
EV charging in Hallstatt: Two bays at P1, and no price
The operator lists two electric-car spaces at the entrance to P1, just after the petrol station, and says parking is free while the car charges. The charging itself is chargeable; no kilowatt rating and no per-kWh price appears on the page.
That is all I can confirm in the village. I would arrive with a full battery and treat P1 as a top-up.
Where to charge
- P1 entrance: two EV bays — Parkplatz P1, just after the petrol station towards Obertraun. Parking is free in both spaces while the car charges. Charging is chargeable; no kW rating and no per-kWh price on the operator's page. Pay by cash or Visa/Mastercard
Free parking in Hallstatt: Fifteen minutes, two EV bays, and no free hotel found
The free things are small: the first 15 minutes at any of the four car parks, and the parking at the P1 EV bays while you charge. I found no free day parking, and no hotel whose own site promises it; the hotels in the centre cannot be driven to at all.
One 2026-dated guide quotes €10 a day and €150 camera fines. The operator charges €20 and publishes no such fine, so I ignore it.
Free or nearly-free spots
The first 15 minutes are free
At all four car parks the first 15 minutes cost nothing. It is long enough to drop someone at the foot of the walk, not to see the village.
P1 EV bays: free parking while charging
Two spaces at the entrance to P1 waive the parking fee while the car charges; the charging itself is paid.
No free day parking found
I found no free day parking at the village. A 2026-dated guide quotes €10 a day and €150 camera fines; the operator charges €20 and publishes no such fine, so I ignore it.
Hotels with free parking
- Hotels in the centre of Hallstatt — Behind the two barriers. None found with free parking on its own site. The centre cannot be driven to; guests park at P1 on the hotel ticket (€20, €18, €12, then €10 a day, €7 from day eight) and take the free shuttle, 09:00–19:00
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- Two barriers close the historic centre to visitors by car, and to hotel guests too. Park at P1 to P4 and walk, or ride the hotel shuttle (09:00–19:00) if you have a room.
- A guest with a room in the centre must press the hotel-ticket button at the P1 machine before the first exit; otherwise the day-visitor tariff applies.
- The tariff steps at four hours: 3–4 hours is €10, 5–6 hours is €12. A lost ticket is €40.
- Day visitors cannot reserve a space, according to the operator's parking page; the arrival page elsewhere on hallstatt.net advises booking ahead. I believe the parking page.
- Coaches need a booked slot (at least 2 h 20 min between entry and exit, €126 a day from 1 May 2026). A 2019 report gave a cap of 54 buses a day; no current figure is published on the operator's pages.
- The Salzwelten funicular's last descent is 18:00 until 24 October 2026, then 16:00 until 6 January 2027; the timetable after that is not published.
