Hallstatt: a village you reach by boat or on foot
The train station is on the other side of the lake, so the way in from the station is a ferry: €4, ten minutes, cash only, every day of the year. By car the road ends at two barriers. After that you walk, and I like that more than I expected to.
The photo point at noon, and a €29 ride for a view
I would not stand at the Hallstatt photo point at midday. It is free and it is the postcard, so the groups come all day; in May 2023 the village mounted a wooden screen there and took one panel down again. Go early or late.
My second skip is the cable car on its own, €29, if all you want is the view. The €49 ticket adds the salt mine for the extra €20, which I think is the better deal. Ride only on a clear morning.
Echerntal and the Waldbachstrub, on foot from the car park
Leave the car at P2 and walk the Waldbachstrub waterfall in the Echerntal. The tourist site gives about 2.5 hours for the family route to the waterfall and about three for the themed trail, starting at P2 and returning to P1. I would do it first, before the village, so the car park clock is already running on something worth the money.
Convert the hotel ticket before you leave P1
If you have a room in the centre, park at P1, take the entry ticket, and tell the attendant which house you booked. Then, before the first exit, press the hotel-ticket button on the machine. Skip it and you pay the day-visitor rates. The converted ticket costs €20 for day one, €18 for day two, €12 for day three, €10 a day for days four to seven, €7 from day eight, and the free shuttle carries you and the luggage from 09:00 to 19:00.
A square, a church of skulls, and a salt mine
The Marktplatz burned on 20 September 1750. The fire destroyed 35 houses and killed four people, and the square you see is the rebuild.
The Catholic church stands up a flight of stone steps. The Beinhaus beside it, in the Michael chapel, holds over 600 painted skulls; the hallstatt.net page gives no hours or fee, so ask at the door.
The Evangelical church is neo-Gothic and dates from 1863. It holds concerts in summer.
The World Heritage Museum is €12 for adults. In October it opens 10:00 to 16:00 daily, from 1 November Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 to 16:00.
Salzwelten and the Skywalk reopened on 29 August 2026 after a year's closure. One trade site says 1 September; the tourist board's pages say 29 August. The funicular rises in about three minutes, the mine holds a Bronze Age staircase dated to 1344 BCE, and the combined ticket is €49. The last descent is 18:00 until 24 October, then 16:00 until 6 January 2027.
The lake boat round trip south costs €18 from late May to September, departing the Lahn stop at 11:10, 13:10, 14:10 and 15:10, weather permitting.
Lake fish, goulash and apricot pockets
The lake fish is the thing to order: Reinanke, a whitefish, and Bachsaibling, brook char. Two restaurants list them. For something heavier there is Kalbsrahmgulasch, veal in cream sauce, and Reh-Gulasch, venison stew; for dessert Marillenmarmeladetaschen, apricot-jam pastries.
Gasthof Zauner serves lunch 11:30 to 14:30 and dinner 18:00 to 21:30, with a fish platter on the menu. Zum Bader is small, about 25 seats, takes no reservations and is closed on Wednesday and Thursday. The Bräugasthof says it has traded since 1504 and cooks lake fish. My pick is Zauner for the fish, at 11:30 when the kitchen opens.
Museum night, winter hours, and the Glöckler
Saturday 3 October 2026 is the museum night, and the World Heritage Museum stays open until midnight according to hallstatt.net.
From 25 October 2026 the funicular's last descent moves to 16:00. From 1 November the museum drops to Wednesday to Sunday.
On 5 January 2027 the village's Glöckler processions take place, according to hallstatt.net, which says it is an annual date. I found no published Advent market date for Hallstatt in 2026, so I give none.
