A hospital roof, a mustard mill and a free terrace
Beaune is small enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes, ramparts included. One morning for the Hôtel-Dieu, one afternoon for wine, and you've seen it.
1. Book the Hôtel-Dieu before 15 November
The Hôtel-Dieu ticket is €12.50 in 2026, free under 6. Until 15 November it's open 09:00–19:30 straight; from the 16th it shuts for lunch. Its Last Judgement altarpiece was due to leave for a Paris restoration lab from September 2026, so don't come only for that.
2. Climb the Cité's terrace for free
The Cité des Climats et Vins has a 20-metre panoramic terrace reached by a ramp, free. The trail with a tasting is €14.50.
3. Watch mustard ground on stone
Moutarderie Fallot still grinds seed on a stone millstone. Tours from €9, daily in French; English only June to September.
4. Walk the ramparts loop
About half of the ramparts survive, and a travel guide puts the loop at nearly 2 km. I'd walk it before dinner.
5. Find the Virgin's hangings at Notre-Dame
The Collégiale Notre-Dame keeps 15th-century woven hangings of the Life of the Virgin in the choir. Mid-morning is quiet.
6. See the presses at the Musée du Vin
The Musée du Vin de Bourgogne fills the old ducal residence with presses and tools. The courtyard alone is worth the detour.
Snails, eggs in red wine and 32 wines by the glass
1. Order œufs en meurette once
Eggs poached in red-wine sauce are the Burgundy starter. Ma Cuisine does them, with snails by the dozen. Evenings mostly; the guides disagree on the days, so ring.
2. Taste by the glass at Loiseau
Loiseau des Vignes pours up to 32 wines by the glass. Closed Sunday and Monday. It's the cheapest way I know to compare two villages.
3. Shop the Saturday market
The Halles market runs from early morning until 13:00 on Saturday, smaller on Wednesday 07:00–12:30. Buy jambon persillé there.
4. Leave room for bœuf bourguignon
It's on every menu in town. I'd eat it once and spend the rest on the wine.
The auction Sunday and a town that fills up
1. Plan around 15 November
The 166th Hospices de Beaune wine auction is Sunday 15 November 2026, 14:30, under the Halles, run by Sotheby's. The town publishes no road closures. It's a Sunday, so the meters are free, but I'd park on the ring by 10:00.
2. Taste around it on 14–15 November
Wine houses run open cellars over the auction weekend. I'd book a slot rather than queue.
3. Use the free holidays
1 November (a Sunday) and Wednesday 11 November are public holidays: no meter, no disc. Christmas dates for 2026 weren't published when I checked.
