Driving in? Where to park

Best parking bet

City garages such as Tuškanac charge €1.60 an hour by day, €0.80 at night. Buy the €13.30 24-hour ticket from staff within ten minutes of entering.

Watch out

Zone I: two hours maximum, Mon–Sat 07:00–24:00, Sun 07:00–15:00. Overstay and you're issued a €13.30 daily ticket. SMS payment does not work with foreign SIMs.

01 · Sights

A 66-metre railway, a noon cannon and a tiled roof

The Upper Town is small enough for one morning on foot, and the funicular saves you the steepest bit. I'd time it so you're on the promenade below Lotrščak at noon.

1. Ride the 66-metre funicular

The Uspinjača climbs 66 m in 64 seconds for €0.66. ZET calls it the shortest public funicular in the world; Wikipedia only says one of the shortest. It reopened on 19 May 2026 after more than a year of renovation.

2. Stand under Lotrščak at noon

A cannon fires from Lotrščak Tower every day at noon, a time signal since 1 January 1877. The tower is €3, closed on Mondays.

3. Look at St Mark's roof

The tiles of St Mark's Church spell out the arms of Zagreb and of the Triple Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. It was restored after the 2020 earthquake and you can go in, but a security fence still rings the square.

4. Go back inside the cathedral

Zagreb Cathedral reopened on Christmas Eve 2025, nearly six years after the earthquake. Visits run daily 08:00–19:00 while the restoration carries on.

5. Give the broken hearts an hour

The Museum of Broken Relationships is €9, open daily from 09:00 until 21:00 in winter and 22:00 in summer. Every object comes with a break-up story; it's the one museum here I'd never skip.

6. Cross Dolac before noon

Dolac has been the city's main market since 1930: red umbrellas on a terrace above Ban Jelačić Square.

The classic mistake is reaching Lotrščak at 12:05.

02 · Food

Štrukli, a stuffed schnitzel and cheese with cream

1. Order the štrukli baked

Thin dough wrapped round fresh cheese, boiled or baked with cream. La Štruk serves almost nothing else and opens late morning every day. Baked, with the top browned, is the version I'd order.

2. Buy sir i vrhnje at Dolac

Fresh cow's cheese with sour cream, sold in the covered lower market at Dolac beside the butchers and fishmongers. Visit Zagreb gives 07:00–15:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:00–13:00 on Sunday; the operator's last notice I found, from 2020, had it shut on Sundays.

3. Eat purica s mlincima on Sunday

Roast turkey with mlinci, thin baked flatbread soaked in the roasting juices. It's the family Sunday lunch.

4. Share a zagrebački odrezak

A veal schnitzel stuffed with ham and cheese, breaded and fried. One plate feeds two.

My pick: Dolac for breakfast, štrukli for lunch.

03 · Festivals

Marathon Sunday and six weeks of Advent

1. Avoid the centre on 11 October

A race calendar gives Sunday 11 October 2026 for the Zagreb Marathon, starting and finishing on Ban Jelačić Square at 09:00. The city hasn't published closures yet; in 2025 roads were shut from 08:30 to 14:30.

2. Plan for Advent, 28 November to 7 January

Advent Zagreb runs from Saturday 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, with stalls warming up from 25 November. It fills the Strossmayer promenade, Plato Gradec, Ban Jelačić Square and Gajeva and Bogovićeva streets.

3. Leave the car in Zone IV

Zagrebparking's Advent advice points to big Zone IV car parks such as Gredelj and Maksimir. That page still quotes kuna, so go by today's €1.30 a day. I'd take it and walk in.

04 · History

A diocese from 1094 and a scarf that became a tie

1. Date the city from 1094

The diocese was founded in 1094; the name Zagreb first appears in a charter of 1134.

2. Thank Croatian soldiers for the cravat

The word comes from the Croats, whose neck scarves caught Europe's eye during the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century.

3. Don't believe the chicken story

Legend says the Grič cannon once fired across the Sava into an Ottoman camp, killed the pasha's dinner and ended the siege. The record starts in 1877, with a time signal for bell-ringers. The 2020 earthquake, the strongest in Zagreb since 1880, is the history you can still see in the scaffolding.
