An El Greco, a mosque from 999 and a siege
Toledo sits on a rock in a loop of the Tagus, and once you're up the escalators everything is walkable. One guide sells the Pulsera Turística: €14 for seven monuments, valid seven days.
1. See The Burial of the Count of Orgaz
El Greco painted it in 1586 for Santo Tomé, and it's 4.80 m by 3.60 m. Entry is €4; from 16 October to February it's open 10:00–17:45. I'd go first thing, before the tour groups.
2. Find the date at Cristo de la Luz
The Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz carries a Kufic inscription dating it to 999, and it's the oldest building still standing in the city. €4, and it's in the bracelet.
3. Give the cathedral two hours
The Catedral Primada took until 1493 to finish. Wikipedia gives the start as 1226 in one article and 1227 in another; either way, it's two and a half centuries of building.
4. Look up at the Alcázar
The Alcázar was besieged in 1936 until Franco's forces lifted it in late September. Corralillo car park is right beside it.
5. Walk in through Puerta de Bisagra
Puerta de Bisagra was rebuilt in the 16th century by Alonso de Covarrubias. The Recaredo escalator is a short walk away.
6. Drive the ring road to Mirador del Valle
The Mirador del Valle looks back at the whole city from across the Tagus, near the Ermita de la Virgen del Valle. The city publishes no car park for it, so I'd stop briefly where the kerb is clearly legal.
Carcamusas, partridge and marzipan since 1856
1. Order carcamusas at Bar Ludeña
Bar Ludeña is the best-known place for carcamusas, meat stewed in tomato with peas and a bit of heat. Directo al Paladar says a ración is €8 and that the bar invented it.
2. Eat partridge the Toledo way
Perdiz estofada, stewed partridge, is the city's game dish. Venta de Aires serves it in a €27 tasting menu.
3. Try a bomba at El Trébol
At El Trébol the bomba is a potato stuffed with meat and peppers, topped with aioli and spicy tomato.
4. Buy marzipan from Santo Tomé
Mazapán de Toledo has a protected geographical indication. Santo Tomé has made it since 1856; the tourist board also lists convents such as San Clemente.
I'd take a box of marzipan home and leave the souvenir swords in the shop.
Corpus Christi on 27 May 2027
1. Park outside for Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi falls on Thursday 27 May 2027. The Custodia, about 160 kg, is carried along a 2,400 m route under white awnings; it has been a Festival of International Tourist Interest since 2014. I'd use Azarquiel that day.
2. Expect campervans at Semana Santa
Holy Week runs 21–28 March 2027. The council opened La Peraleda with a shuttle in 2025 and 2026; the 2027 plan isn't out yet.
3. Check Christmas dates in November
I found no published dates for the 2026 Christmas programme.
