Toledo's old town is closed to your car: retractable bollards and number-plate cameras guard the streets on the hill, and only authorised vehicles get through. The council counts 5,734 of them. A foreign hire car isn't one, whatever the satnav says.
I'd park at Safont below the walls, €0.40 an hour, and ride the free escalators up to Plaza de Zocodover. Eight hours costs €3.20. If you'd rather pay nothing, Azarquiel is free and a longer walk.
Parking in Toledo: Safont at €0.40, Corralillo at €19.80
1. Don't follow the satnav uphill
The council's 2025 low-emission zone (ZBE) project describes the system already in place: retractable bollards and plate-reading cameras, run from the Policía Local's control room. Controlled streets are shut to traffic 11:00–22:00 Sunday to Wednesday and 11:00–03:00 Thursday to Saturday; San Román is closed round the clock. No official fine is published; guides say €90–200.
2. Let your hotel register the plate
One guide says hotels with their own parking inside the walls can give your plate to the police before you arrive. Ask in writing. No hotel garage, no entry: park outside and walk.
3. Park at Safont and ride up
Safont is the big open car park opposite the bus station, 610 spaces. Since 1 February 2025 it's an ORA magenta zone: free for Toledo residents, €0.40 an hour for everyone else, 24 hours a day according to OCU, the consumer group. That's €3.20 for eight hours and €9.60 for a full day. A 2026 guide says you only pay in ORA hours; I'd budget the higher figure. The Safont escalators climb to Zocodover for free, 07:00–midnight and until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday, according to one guide.
4. Use Recaredo for Puerta de Bisagra
Recaredo sits at the foot of the Recaredo escalator, which two sources time at Monday to Thursday 07:00–23:00, Friday 07:00–02:00, Saturday 08:00–02:00, Sunday and holidays 08:00–23:00. Indigo publishes no walk-up tariff; Parclick sells two hours from €4.02. No city page lists these hours.
5. Pay about €2 under the Alcázar
Corralillo de San Miguel is the closest garage to the Alcázar and the cathedral, 515 spaces, open 24 hours. One guide gives €2 an hour and €19.80 a day. Parclick lists 1.90 m; another listing says 2 m, so trust the lower one. Miradero, under Zocodover, is €2.50 an hour and from €24.60 a day in a 2026 guide, height 2 m.
The classic mistake is trusting the satnav into a bollard street. Safont's €3.20 day is the cheapest fix in town.

| A full day (10 h) | Safont + escalators, 8 hours | €3.20 | €0.40 an hour, so €3.20 for an eight-hour visit; the escalators up to Zocodover are free. Toledo residents park free, so it fills early: one guide says by 11:00 on a Saturday. |

Towed in Toledo: Toledo tows from the green bays
1. Read the line colour first
ORA blue bays cost €0.95 an hour for visitors, two hours at most; orange bays are the same price with no cap. Two guides give the hours as Monday to Friday 10:00–14:00 and 17:00–20:00, Saturday morning only. Pay with the ElParking or Telpark apps. Green bays are for residents, and that's where the tow truck goes.
2. Never park green in the old town
El Español reported in April 2026 that the residents' green zone covers almost the whole old town, now including Saturday nights, and that weekend tow campaigns target cars left there. The council took the grúa back from a private operator and runs it itself.
3. Budget about €160 if towed
Toledo publishes no current tow tariff online that I could find. OCU's 2022 survey put the city at about €160 for the tow plus 25 hours' storage; its 2012 figure was €132.09. The parking fine comes on top. That €160 would buy fifty eight-hour days at Safont.
4. Ring 112 if the car's gone
The city publishes no pound address or phone. Ring 112, ask for the Policía Local and find out where the car went.
A blue bay is fine for two hours at lunch. A green bay overnight is how a cheap weekend becomes a €160 one.
If your car has disappeared
- Who took it
- The Policía Local enforces parking and the grúa municipal, which the council took back from a private operator, tows. Weekend campaigns target cars in residents' green bays in the old town
- Phone
- Emergency, if the car is gone; ask for the Policía Local: 112
- Collect it at
- The city publishes no pound address or phone number online that I could find. Ring 112 and ask where the car was taken.

- What it costs
- No current tariff published. OCU's 2022 survey: about €160 for the tow plus 25 hours' storage. OCU's 2012 figure was €132.09. The parking fine comes on top
- Bring
- The city lists nothing. I would bring the registration papers, my licence and passport, and for a hire car the rental agreement; ring the rental company too.
EV charging in Toledo: Toledo's chargers: three plugs, few prices
1. Charge at Corralillo
Indigo installed three charging points at Corralillo de San Miguel in 2020, with Nissan. Neither the power nor the price is published, so read the screen before you plug in.
2. Don't expect an EV discount
The council announced ORA discounts for electric cars, but OCU said in June 2025 they weren't regulated yet. An EV pays the same €0.95 an hour in a blue bay.
3. Don't count on the label
A foreign car has no Spanish DGT environmental label, electric or not. The camera zone isn't about emissions anyway: without authorisation, an EV gets the same notice as a diesel.
Toledo publishes no charger map. I'd arrive with enough range to get back to the motorway.
Where to charge
- Corralillo de San Miguel — 3 points — Corralillo de San Miguel, beside the Alcázar. Indigo installed three points in 2020 with Nissan; power and price not published, so read the screen
- No city charger network published — Toledo publishes no public charger list or tariff. The council announced ORA discounts for EVs, but OCU said in June 2025 they were not yet regulated: an EV pays €0.95 an hour like everyone else
Free parking in Toledo: Free at Azarquiel, almost free at Safont
1. Park free at Azarquiel
The council's own ZBE document lists Azarquiel as a free disuasory car park, by the Puente de Azarquiel. One guide puts the walk at about 12 minutes via the Paseo de la Rosa. No escalator, so it's uphill.
2. Try Santa Teresa as a backup
Santa Teresa is the other free car park the same document names. I found no official page with its size or hours.
3. Park free on Sundays
Two guides agree that blue and orange bays are free on Sundays and public holidays; one adds that in July and August payment stops at 14:00. Green bays never become free for visitors.
4. Send campervans to La Peraleda
At Semana Santa the council opens a free overnight zone at La Peraleda with water and a shuttle bus, €1.40 in 2026. Overnight stays are banned at Safont, Santa Teresa, Salto del Caballo, Toletum and Recaredo.
5. Don't expect free hotel parking
I found no hotel whose own website promises free parking. Ask in writing.
Azarquiel saves €3.20 on Safont and €19.80 on Corralillo. I'd still pay the €3.20 for the escalator.
Free or nearly-free spots
Azarquiel, free disuasory car park
The council's ZBE project lists Azarquiel as a free disuasory car park. It sits by the Puente de Azarquiel; one guide puts the walk at about 12 minutes via the Paseo de la Rosa. No escalator.
Santa Teresa, the second free car park
Named in the same council document as free and disuasory. I found no official page with its size or hours. Campervans may not stay overnight.
Sundays and holidays at the kerb
Two guides agree: ORA blue and orange bays are free on Sundays and public holidays. One adds that in July and August payment stops at 14:00. Green bays stay residents only.
La Peraleda for campervans at Easter
At Semana Santa the council opens a free overnight zone at La Peraleda with water and a shuttle bus (€1.40 in 2026). Overnight stays are banned at Safont, Santa Teresa, Salto del Caballo, Toletum and Recaredo.
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- The old-town access zone uses retractable bollards and number-plate cameras, controlled from the Policía Local's room. Satnavs route through it; follow the signs to Safont or Azarquiel instead.
- ZBE: the ordinance was voted down in November 2025, and the ministry's deadline was 30 September 2026. I found no approval since. A 2026 parking blog says the ZBE has applied since January 2026; El Español's July 2026 report contradicts it, and I go with El Español.
- A foreign car has no DGT environmental label, so if the ZBE does start, check the city's rules for foreign plates before you go.
- Car park prices for Corralillo and Miradero come from guides; Indigo and Parkia publish no walk-up tariff I could read. Check the board at the barrier.
- Escalator hours come from guides and a forum, not from the city. Check before you plan a late return to Safont.
