Siena's ZTL, the camera-controlled limited traffic zone, covers the old town inside the walls 24 hours a day, every day. A foreign plate is read like an Italian one, and one wrong turn through a gate costs €83 to €332 before the hire company adds its fee.
I'd park at La Stazione below the town: €0.50 for the first hour, €2 for the rest of the day. Then I'd ride the free escalator up to Porta Camollia and walk.
Parking in Siena: Siena's €2 station car park and €35 garages
1. Treat every gate as closed
The city's 2025 permit rules say the ZTL is valid "tutti i giorni nell'orario 0/24". Named gates include San Marco, Fontanella, Mascagni, Bastianini, Pispini, Porta Romana, Ovile, Camollia and Garibaldi. Even permit holders may cross Zone Y, round the Campo, only from 06:00 to 10:00. If the sat nav says "through Porta Romana", it's wrong.
2. Get the hotel to register your plate
Only an accommodation business inside the ZTL can do it, free. Since the update of 19 May 2026 it may register a guest twice a day, for 45 minutes each time to unload, and has two working days after you pass the camera. Drive the shortest route and put the booking sheet and a parking disc on the dashboard. The September 2025 rules said one entry of two hours; the newer rule wins. A private holiday let may not qualify, so ask before you book.
3. Park at La Stazione for €2
Sigerico, the city company that now runs what used to be Siena Parcheggi, lists La Stazione at €0.50 for the first hour and €2 for the rest of the day. It has 480 spaces, height 2.05 m, and it's free on Monday 08:30–15:00 during the market. Sigerico doesn't say how a second day is charged.
4. Pay €35 a day near the Campo
Il Campo (555 spaces, 2.05 m), Santa Caterina (512, 2.00 m), San Francesco (284, 2.05 m) and Il Duomo (202) all charge €2 an hour, €35 a day, €85 for three days, €140 a week. Il Duomo's ground floor is only 1.90 m. Hotel guests pay €25 a day for stays over 12 hours, with a QR code from the hotel.
5. Choose Stadio Fortezza for a long day
Stadio Fortezza has 698 spaces at €2 an hour from 07:00 to 20:00, capped at €26. The Fortezza entrance shuts on Wednesdays for the market, the stadium entrance on Robur Siena match days.
6. Pay the blue lines every day
Blue bays cost €1.50 an hour, 08:00–20:00, weekends and holidays included. Pay at the meter or with the SiPark Sosta, EasyPark or Dropticket apps.
Three nights at Il Campo is €75 with the hotel QR and €85 without. At La Stazione the first day is €2.

Towed in Siena: Siena's police tow, and the pound is unpublished
1. Ring the Polizia Locale front office
The municipal police front office handles towed cars and gives them back. Ring 0577 292554; the counter opens Monday to Friday 10:00–12:00, Tuesday also 15:00–17:00. The city publishes no pound address, towing fee or weekend hours.
2. Ring 112 if it's simply gone
Outside office hours, or if you think the car was stolen, call 112. Sigerico's own line, 800 562 565, is for car parks and permits, not the tow.
3. Budget for the camera instead
Italy's road code fines an unauthorised ZTL entry €83 to €332. Paid within five days, €83 drops 30% to €58.10. Add a hire company fee such as Avis's €31.72 and one wrong turn is €89.82 at best.
I've never seen a Siena page that worries me about the tow truck. The gates are another story.
If your car has disappeared
- Who took it
- The Polizia Locale (municipal police) removes cars under the highway code and returns them through its front office. Sigerico, the city company, runs car parks, blue lines and ZTL permits but not the tow. The city publishes no pound address, towing fee or storage fee
- Phone
- Polizia Locale front office (towed cars), Mon–Fri 10:00–12:00, Tue also 15:00–17:00: +39 0577 292554
Emergency, if the car is gone outside office hours or you suspect theft: 112
Sigerico (car parks, ZTL permits): 800 562 565 - Collect it at
- No car pound address is published. The front office is run by the Polizia Locale; the city's switchboard is 0577 292111.
- Hours
- Front office Mon–Fri 10:00–12:00, Tuesday also 15:00–17:00. Pound hours not published.
- What it costs
- Towing and storage: not published. A ZTL camera fine is €83–€332; paid within five days, €83 becomes €58.10. Hire companies add a handling fee (Avis €31.72).
- Bring
- Nothing is listed for visitors. I would bring my driving licence, passport and the rental contract, and ring the hire company first.
EV charging in Siena: Siena's car parks don't list chargers
1. Don't count on a car park plug
None of the seven Sigerico car park pages I read mentions charging. I'd arrive with enough range to leave again.
2. Charge at the station shopping centre
Electromaps lists four points at the Galleria PortaSiena car park, where the station escalator starts. Price and power aren't listed.
3. Use Via Fausto Coppi for speed
Ewiva lists six CCS connectors with up to 300 kW at Via Fausto Coppi 1, open 24/7. No price is shown, so read the screen.
4. Expect no ZTL exemption
Nothing in the permit rules I read lets an electric car through the gates without a permit.
Where to charge
- Galleria PortaSiena car park — 4 points — Galleria PortaSiena, by the station, where the escalator to Porta Camollia starts. Listed by Electromaps; operator, power and price not shown
- Ewiva Via Fausto Coppi — 6 CCS, up to 300 kW — Via Fausto Coppi 1, open 24/7. Fast charging listed by the operator; no price on its page
- Strada di Pescaia, near Il Fagiolone — Strada di Pescaia 52, on the way in from Siena Ovest. Electromaps lists three connectors at an Eni station; details not shown
Free parking in Siena: Siena's free escalators and €2 days
1. Ride the escalators, never pay
Sigerico lists three, all free and open 24/7. The station one climbs 62 m over a 283 m path to Antiporto di Camollia, through the PortaSiena centre. The Costone one, about 150 m from Santa Caterina, is 12 escalators up 35 m to Valle Piatta, near the Duomo. The San Francesco one is about 120 m long and ends in Piazza San Francesco.
2. Treat La Stazione as the park and ride
Siena has no official park and ride with a bus ticket included. La Stazione at €2 a day plus the free escalator does the same job. Against Il Campo's €35 that's €33 saved each day.
3. Try Le Fonti di Pescaia
Le Fonti di Pescaia (238 spaces, 1.95 m) charges the same €0.50 then €2 a day while works close the old free Campino lot. Its walkers' exit is near Porta Camollia.
4. Sleep where parking is free
Two hotels say so on their own sites. Sangallo Park Hotel, at Vico Alto outside the walls, offers free parking for cars and motorbikes. Hotel Athena gives free parking, a covered garage and EV charging, but only if you book on its own site.
Every price here was checked on 26 October 2026 on Sigerico's pages.
Free or nearly-free spots
Three free escalators
Sigerico lists all three as free and open 24/7: station to Antiporto di Camollia (283 m path, 62 m climb), Costone from Santa Caterina to Valle Piatta (12 escalators, 35 m), and San Francesco (about 120 m, to Piazza San Francesco).
La Stazione: €2 for the day
Not free, but close: €0.50 the first hour and €2 for the rest of the day, and free on Monday 08:30–15:00 during the market. Siena has no official park and ride with a bus ticket; this plus the escalator is the equivalent.
Ravacciano blue lines on Sundays
Sigerico's one exception to paying every day: in ARU 5 Ravacciano, Via D. Boninsegna and Via del Vecchietta (below Via Vanni) and Via Lorenzetti are free on Sundays and holidays.
Hotels and their parking
- Sangallo Park Hotel — Strada di Vico Alto 2, 53100 Siena, outside the walls Map. Its own site: the hotel car park is free for guests' cars and motorbikes
- Hotel Athena — Via P. Mascagni 55, 53100 Siena Map. Its own site: two private car parks and a covered garage, free only when you book on that site; EV charging on request; vans and campers pay extra
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- The ZTL is valid 0–24 every day. Even permit holders may cross Zone Y (round the Campo, Banchi di Sopra, Via di Città) only 06:00–10:00, and Zone A only 06:00–10:00 and 15:30–17:00.
- Hotel plate registration changed on 19 May 2026: twice a day, 45 minutes each, within two working days. The September 2025 rules (one entry of two hours, three days) are out of date; the comune's service page matches the newer rule.
- Temporary ZTL permits for individuals (€10 a day, €20 for two or three days, 30 minutes free up to four times a month) are only for listed needs such as bulky goods, passengers over 70 or children under 6. The comune says it processes them within two office hours; Sigerico says apply 48 hours ahead.
- Il Duomo car park is 1.90 m on the ground floor and Le Fonti di Pescaia 1.95 m; a roof box belongs at La Stazione or Il Campo (2.05 m).
- On Palio days (2 July and 16 August) the centre is closed to traffic, and annual contrada permits are suspended from 28 June to 2 July and 12 to 16 August. Park below the walls in the morning.
- Older guides list a free lot at Il Campino; since March 2025 it's closed for works and Le Fonti di Pescaia charges €0.50 then €2 instead.
