Christmas market parking in Europe 2026: twelve markets, and where to leave the car

9 min readChecked 2026-11-07

Most of Europe's big Christmas markets are built on the square you'd want to park on. Strasbourg closes the whole island to cars and shuts three of its garages to visitors. Munich says plainly that there is no parking around Marienplatz. Cologne diverts traffic off the Deutzer Brücke every Advent Saturday. Drive in anyway and you spend the evening queuing for a garage that is already full.

The cheap answer is nearly always park and ride. It costs €4.20 for up to seven people in Strasbourg, €1.50 in Munich and nothing in Maastricht. In Cologne, the right car park on an Advent Saturday makes your parking ticket a free tram ride for up to five.

Dates, prices and rules come from the cities, the market organisers and the car park operators, checked on 7 November 2026. Several cities hadn't yet published their 2026 traffic plans. Where a figure is from last season, or only from press reports, the text says so.

Strasbourg: Leave the Island to the Walkers

The markets run from 27 November to 24 December, 11:30–21:00. On the 24th they close at 18:00.

For the whole market the Grande-Île is closed to traffic. Entry is checked at four bridges, and street parking on the island is banned day and night. The Kléber, Gutenberg and Broglie garages are closed to visitors. Only season-ticket holders with the market permit get in.

Park and ride is the plan. A CTS P+R ticket costs €4.20 a day and covers up to seven people on trams and buses. Only P+R Elsau takes vehicles over 1.90 m, including campervans. Three tram stops on the island (Broglie, Langstross Grand'Rue and Alt Winmärik) close 11:30–21:00. Last year a pop-up P+R at the Zénith ran on market weekends; the 2026 plan isn't out yet.

If you must drive closer, Parcus's Petite France garage outside the closed zone is €15 for 24 hours, height 1.90 m. Strasbourg's low-emission zone needs a Crit'Air sticker on foreign cars too. Our Strasbourg page has the rest.

Colmar: Use the Weekend Shuttle from the Parc des Expositions

The five markets run from 23 November to 29 December, and the gourmet market to 3 January 2027. Hours are Monday–Thursday 11:00–19:00 and Friday–Sunday 10:00–20:00. On 24 December they close at 17:00, and on the 25th they're open 10:00–20:00. Regional press reports the centre closed to vehicles for the market. The official market site didn't load for us, so these figures come from regional press and two guides that agree.

On the four Advent weekends (28–29 November and 5–6, 12–13 and 19–20 December), the P+R at the Parc des Expositions costs €5 a day. A free shuttle leaves for the Saint-Éloi stop every 10 minutes. There's no shuttle on 26–27 December. Regional press also reports Colmar's local buses free on 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20 December.

In town, Saint-Josse and Lacarre give the first hour free, then charge €3 for anything from one to 24 hours. Lacarre's upper levels are free 07:00–01:00. Colmar has no low-emission zone. See our Colmar page.

Brussels: Register the Car, Then Take the Metro

Winter Wonders runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, 12:00–22:00, closing at 18:00 on 24 and 31 December.

The whole region is a low-emission zone. Foreign cars have to be registered before entry or within five days, which is free; an unregistered car is fined €150. A compliant Dutch car is the exception, as Brussels reads its data from the RDW.

Last season the organisers pointed drivers to P+R Ceria or Crainhem: €3, or free with a STIB ticket, about 20 minutes by metro. They also restricted access around the Vismet on Friday and Saturday 16:00–23:00 and Sunday 16:00–22:00. The 2026 version isn't published yet. In the centre, Interparking Monnaie sits right on the market: €3.60 an hour, €30 a day, 1.90 m. The organisers listed evening deals at Loi (€6 from 19:00) and Passage 44 (€10 for 24 hours). More on our Brussels page.

Maastricht: Park Free at Noord, or Book Q-Park Ahead

Magisch Maastricht fills the Vrijthof from 27 November to 27 December, 10:00 to midnight, and until 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. On 24 December it closes at 18:00, and on the 25th it opens 11:00–18:00.

Visit Maastricht sends drivers to P+R Maastricht Noord, which is free. Bus 10 runs every 15 minutes and takes about 12 minutes to the centre. A return costs €2.55 a person, or €6.40 for a group of three to five.

Q-Park Vrijthof is under the market itself, at €35 a day and 2.00 m. Q-Park also sells pre-booked Magisch Maastricht deals, though the pages show no year. At the Bonnefantenmuseum it's €12 a day at weekends, €16 on weekdays, or €9.50 for 17:00–midnight. Visit Maastricht warns that Belgian and German public holidays fill the city even on Dutch working days. Maastricht has no low-emission zone for cars. See our Maastricht page.

Cologne: Park in Deutz on an Advent Saturday and Ride Free

The cathedral market runs from 16 November to 23 December and is closed on 22 November. Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Altstadt opens on 23 November.

On the Advent Saturdays (28 November and 5, 12 and 19 December), city-bound traffic is diverted away from the Deutzer Brücke 11:00–20:00. From 26 November to 23 December, the Markmannsgasse entrance to Tiefgarage Heumarkt is closed 10:00–22:00. The city portal says many central car parks are full from 11:00 on Advent weekends (its 2025 information).

The best deal is the city's own. On those Saturdays, 09:00–16:00, a parking ticket from the LANXESS arena car parks or Tiefgarage Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring is a free transit ticket for up to five people. Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring costs €21 a day, height 1.90 m. KVB's P+R sites are free for 24 hours with a valid VRS ticket, the Deutschlandticket included. Cologne needs a green sticker. See our Cologne page.

Nuremberg: Watch the Live Car Park Board

The Christkindlesmarkt runs from 27 November to 24 December, 10:00–21:00, and until 14:00 on the 24th. It opens on 27 November at 17:30.

The 2026 traffic plan isn't published; last year the Obstmarkt was closed to motor traffic for the whole market. Parkhaus Hauptmarkt is the closest garage, at €20 for 24 hours and 2.00 m; Jakobsmarkt charges the same. The city shows live occupancy for 19 car parks, so check it before you set off. Nuremberg has no low-emission zone. Our Nuremberg page lists the P+R sites on the U-Bahn.

Dresden: Free P+R and the Extra Tram (Last Year's Plan)

The Striezelmarkt fills the Altmarkt from 25 November to 24 December, 10:00–21:00, and until 14:00 on the 24th.

Dresden's 2026 Advent traffic plan wasn't readable when we checked, so this is last season's. The city ran a free P+R at P7 by the Messe, with an extra tram line 20 on Advent weekends straight to the Altmarkt. The southern lane of Wilsdruffer Straße was closed, with Tiefgarage Altmarkt reached from Pirnaischer Platz.

For a cheap garage, APCOA Dresden-Mitte charges €15 for 24 hours, height 2.10 m. Altmarkt-Galerie is €25 at most but closed on Sundays. Dresden has no low-emission zone. See our Dresden page.

Munich: Take the U3 from Fürstenried West

The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz runs from 20 November to 24 December. It is open Monday–Saturday 10:00–21:00, Sunday 10:00–20:00, and until 14:00 on the 24th. It is closed on 22 November.

The city's own visitor page says "Parken ist rund um den Marienplatz nicht möglich": you can't park around Marienplatz. Tiefgarage Marienplatz exists, but it costs €6.50 an hour, €45 for 24 hours, and its height limit is 1.80 m.

P+R Fürstenried West costs €1.50 for 24 hours, and the U3 runs from there to Marienplatz without a change. You need a transit ticket to use P+R, and the machines take coins only. Munich's low-emission zone needs a green sticker, and diesels of Euro 4 and older are banned even with one. See our Munich page.

Vienna: Book the Rathauspark Garage's Evening Rate

The Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December, 10:00–22:00, and until 18:30 on the 24th. Schönbrunn's market runs from 6 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

Parkhaus Rathauspark is next to the market: €4.90 an hour, €45 for 24 hours, height 1.90 m. Its evening flat rate is €6.50 for 17:00–01:00. Online pre-booking needs at least three days' notice. Vienna's P+R garages charge €4.60 for 24 hours, and from P+R Erdberg the U3 reaches the centre in about 10 minutes. At Schönbrunn the palace car park is €5.50 an hour, €55 a day.

Kerb parking is limited to two hours, Monday–Friday 09:00–22:00, and free at weekends. From 1 November to 15 April, Austria requires winter tyres whenever there's snow, slush or ice. See our Vienna page.

Salzburg: Buy the €15 P+R Combined Ticket

The Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. It closes at 15:00 on 24 December and opens 11:00–18:00 on 25 and 26 December.

The Neutor is closed to through traffic this winter, and the tourist board's own pages disagree on which side the Altstadt garages can be reached from. Check its Neutor map before you drive in. The Altstadtgaragen A and B charge €25.90 for 24 hours, and both have a 2.05 m height limit, so a roof box won't fit.

The simpler option is a P+R combined ticket: €15 buys parking for one car and a bus day ticket for up to five people. You must leave by midnight. Last season, bus line 8 ran from P+R Messe and Süd to the Altstadt every 15 minutes on Advent Saturdays, and city buses were free on those days. The city hasn't confirmed either for 2026. See our Salzburg page.

Prague: Use P+R on the Metro, Not a Garage in Prague 1

The Wenceslas Square market runs from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, 10:00–22:00. On 24 December it closes at 14:00, and on the 25th and 26th it opens at noon. Reports give the Old Town Square market the same dates.

Prague hasn't published any market road closures. P+R costs 50 Kč for 24 hours at Chodov, Zličín, Opatov, Nové Butovice and Černý Most, if you show a public-transport ticket used that day. Garáže Muzeum, at the top of Wenceslas Square, is 800 Kč for 24 hours. In Prague 1 a visitor may park on the kerb for one hour a day. Czechia has no low-emission zone, but motorways need an e-vignette, 230 Kč for a day. See our Prague page.

Budapest: Pay by App, and Use the Free P+R

The Basilica market runs from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, and Vörösmarty tér to 31 December. The organisers' sites didn't load for us; two independent reports agree on these dates.

Since 1 July 2026, Budapest street parking takes no cash and has no machines. You pay by app, SMS or phone call. In District V it costs 800 Ft an hour on working days, 08:00–22:00, for up to three hours, and it's free at weekends and on public holidays. Most of BKK's larger P+R car parks are free. Hungary's motorways need an e-vignette (5,550 Ft for a day). During smog alerts the city can ban Euro 0–4 cars for a time. See our Budapest page.

Stickers and Vignettes on the Way

Four of these cities need something on the car before you arrive: - Strasbourg: a Crit'Air sticker. - Cologne and Munich: the green Umweltplakette. - Brussels: online registration.

Czechia and Hungary need motorway e-vignettes. Sort these out before you set off. Our low-emission zones index and tolls and vignettes guide cover each country.

What I'd do

I'd go on a weekday if I could, and use park and ride every time. Where a city sells a combined ticket (Strasbourg, Salzburg, Cologne on Saturdays) I'd buy it, because it covers the whole family. I'd only book a central garage for an evening rate, like Vienna's €6.50 or Maastricht's €9.50, and I'd check the height limit first: several of these garages stop at 1.80–1.90 m.

Every date and price on this page was checked on 7 November 2026. Cities publish their Advent traffic plans in mid-November, so check the city's page again the week you go.
