Dresden has no Umweltzone, so a foreign car needs no green sticker here: the federal environment agency treats it as a city without one. The catch is the Altstadt kerb, which charges €2.40 an hour every day, Sunday included.
My plan: leave the car free at the P+R by the Messe and ride tram 10 in. If the tram doesn't suit, I'd pay €8 for the daytime at APCOA's Dresden-Mitte garage and walk.
Parking in Dresden: Dresden's Altstadt kerb charges on Sunday too
1. Leave the green sticker at home
The Umweltbundesamt compares Leipzig "with Umweltzone" against Dresden without one. Back in 2012 the city said it was relying on its 2011 air-quality plan instead of a zone. There's nothing to buy or register for a foreign plate. Driving on to Leipzig? Check that city's zone first.
2. Pay €2.40 an hour in Zone 1
The city's fee ordinance splits Dresden into three zones. Zone 1, the Altstadt and the Äußere Neustadt, is €2.40 an hour Monday to Saturday with a €12 day rate, and €1.50 an hour, €6 a day on Sundays and holidays. The Altstadt charges 08:00–20:00 every day; the Äußere Neustadt charges 09:00 to midnight. At €2.40 an hour, the day rate wins from the fifth hour.
3. Drop a zone and the price drops
Zone 2, a ring around the centre, is €1.50 an hour or €6 a day. Zone 3, the rest of the city, is €1.20 or €5. Both charge Monday to Saturday 08:00–19:00 and are free on Sundays and holidays.
4. Trust the machine over this page
These rates come from the ordinance that dresden.de still posts: adopted in 2021, last amended in 2022. A new Parkgebührenverordnung was on the council agenda in February 2025 and was postponed in March. I couldn't confirm what was decided, so if the meter shows another price, the meter wins.
5. Pick the garage by the clock
By the Zwinger, APCOA's Haus am Zwinger starts at €3.20 an hour with a €35 day cap, and from €1.50 an hour between 19:00 and 05:00. The Taschenbergpalais garage is €2.90 per started hour, also €35, and shuts from midnight to 06:00. Altmarkt-Galerie caps at €25 but closes at 22:00 and all Sunday. Q-Park's Frauenkirche/Neumarkt and Altmarkt print no tariff online. All of them are 2.00–2.10 m high.
Five hours by the Zwinger cost €16 under a roof and €12 at the kerb. For a whole day I'd use neither.

Towed in Dresden: Dresden's Ordnungsamt tows, and answers at any hour
1. Ring 0351 488 6333 first
The Gemeindlicher Vollzugsdienst, the enforcement team of the Ordnungsamt (public order office), does the towing. Its operations centre on 0351 488 6333 tells you at any time whether the car was towed and where to collect it. The police are informed too, on 0351 483 2226.
2. Don't expect a published price
The city publishes no car pound address, opening hours or tow fee. Questions about the bill go to the office at Theaterstraße 11–15, on 0351 488 6338. I'm not going to invent a number.
3. Keep off the €55 spots
Germany's 2021 fine catalogue charges €55 for a pavement, cycle path, fire-brigade access, disabled bay or EV bay. Those are the classic places to get towed, and the tow is billed on top. An unpaid meter is only €20 for up to 30 minutes, rising to €40 after three hours.
4. Carry the papers
The city lists nothing. I'd bring passport, licence and the registration document, and in a hire car I'd ring the rental company first.
Skipping a €12 day ticket risks a €40 fine. That isn't a gamble I'd take.
If your car has disappeared
- Who took it
- The Gemeindlicher Vollzugsdienst (enforcement service) of Dresden's Ordnungsamt (public order office) tows cars and informs the police afterwards. The city publishes no pound address, hours or tow fee
- Phone
- Ordnungsamt operations centre: was my car towed, and where is it? (any time): 0351 488 6333
Polizeidirektion Dresden (police): 0351 483 2226
Ordnungsamt, towing costs (Theaterstraße 11–15): 0351 488 6338
Emergency only: 110 - Collect it at
- Not published. The operations centre tells you where to collect the car; cost questions go to the Ordnungsamt office.
- Hours
- Pound hours not published. The city says the operations centre gives information at any time.
- What it costs
- No tow or storage fee is published for Dresden. National fines: €20–€40 for no ticket or overstaying, €55 on a pavement, cycle path, fire-brigade access, disabled bay or EV bay; the tow is billed on top.
- Bring
- The city lists nothing. I would bring passport, driving licence and the registration document; in a hire car, ring the rental company first.
EV charging in Dresden: Dresden charges EVs like everyone else now
1. Don't expect free kerb while charging
The 2021 ordinance let an electric car park free while it charged: up to four hours on a normal charger, one hour on a fast one. That exemption ran only until 31 December 2022. Today an EV pays the zone rate.
2. Charge under the Neumarkt
Q-Park lists 15 charging points at Frauenkirche/Neumarkt and 8 at Altmarkt. APCOA lists 7 at Straßburger Platz and 5 at Altmarkt-Galerie. None of them publishes a charging price, so read the screen before you plug in.
3. Mind the opening hours
Straßburger Platz lets you in only 06:00–23:00, though you can leave at any time.
My pick is the Neumarkt: fifteen points under the Frauenkirche.
Where to charge
- Q-Park Frauenkirche / Neumarkt — 15 points — Q-Park Frauenkirche/Neumarkt, under the Neumarkt. The most points I could confirm in the Altstadt; no price online, so read the screen
- Q-Park Altmarkt — 8 points — Q-Park Altmarkt. Price not published
- APCOA Straßburger Platz — 7 spaces — Straßburger Platz, €2 an hour, €15 a calendar day. Power and price not published
- APCOA Altmarkt-Galerie — 5 spaces — Altmarkt-Galerie, closed Sunday. Price not published
Free parking in Dresden: Dresden's P+R lots charge nothing
1. Park at the Messe, ride tram 10
DVB, the city transport company, says parking at its P+R sites is free. P+R Messe Dresden has about 800 spaces, open around the clock and signposted from the A4 exit Dresden-Altstadt. Tram 10 runs from Messering into town. Those figures come from DVB's 2019 guide; I found nothing newer.
2. Count the tram, not the parking
A single within Dresden is €3.60 and a day ticket €9.50, on VVO fares from 1 April 2026. Two singles cost €7.20, against €12 at the Zone 1 kerb or €25 in the Altmarkt-Galerie.
3. Try the small lots on the edge
VVO's live list shows Gompitz (46 spaces), Grenzstraße (40) and Weißig (32), and says P+R parking is usually free. DVB's older list adds Kaditz (195), Prohlis (67), Klotzsche (35, S2) and Reick (21, S1 and S2).
4. Park free on Sunday outside the centre
Zones 2 and 3 are free on Sundays, holidays and after 19:00. The Altstadt is free only between 20:00 and 08:00.
5. Don't count on free hotel parking
I found no Dresden hotel whose own website says parking is free. B&B's two Dresden hotels offer their own car park or garage, subject to availability, with no price stated.
Prices were checked on 2 November 2026. APCOA's Dresden-Mitte, at €8 for the daytime, is my fallback when the tram doesn't fit.
Free or nearly-free spots
P+R Messe Dresden, tram 10
About 800 free spaces on Messering, open around the clock and signposted from the A4 exit Dresden-Altstadt (DVB, 2019). Tram 10 runs to the centre; in Advent the city adds tram 20. Parking is free; the tram ticket is not (€3.60 single).
The small P+R lots on the edge
VVO's live list shows Gompitz (46 spaces), Grenzstraße (40) and Weißig (32) and says P+R parking is usually free. DVB's 2019 list adds Kaditz (195), Prohlis (67), Klotzsche (35, S2) and Reick (21, S1 and S2).
Sundays in zones 2 and 3
Under the fee ordinance, zones 2 and 3 charge Monday to Saturday 08:00–19:00 only, so Sundays, holidays and evenings are free. The Altstadt charges every day 08:00–20:00, so it is free overnight only.
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- Dresden has no Umweltzone: the Umweltbundesamt treats it as a city without one, and Saxony's only zone in the ÖAMTC list (March 2024) is Leipzig. Driving on to Leipzig? Check that zone before you go.
- The Altstadt kerb charges on Sunday too (€1.50 an hour, €6 a day), 08:00–20:00. Only zones 2 and 3 are free on Sunday.
- A new Parkgebührenverordnung was on the council agenda on 12 February 2025 and again in March 2025, when it was postponed. I could not confirm whether it passed; the prices here are from the 2021 text that dresden.de still posts. Read the machine.
- Altmarkt-Galerie closes at 22:00 and all Sunday. For an evening at the Semperoper, Haus am Zwinger (24/7, from €1.50 an hour after 19:00) is the safer garage.
- Every central garage on this page is 2.00–2.10 m high; a van with a roof box belongs at the Messe P+R.
- dresden.de blocks automated reading of its HTML pages, so the P+R list and car park live counts on the city site could not be checked; the P+R details here come from VVO, DVB and the city's own PDFs.
