Bats in the library, a king in Santa Cruz, a convent behind scaffolding
Almost everything sits on the hill or just across the bridge. Do the university in the morning, then walk down past the Sé Velha into the Baixa.
1. Book the Joanina slot first
The university ticket office on Rua Larga is open daily 09:00–18:00. The €16.50 ticket covers the Biblioteca Joanina, the Royal Palace, the chapel and the Science Museum, and gives you a fixed time for the library. Arrive five minutes early: a missed slot is lost. Two colonies of bats have lived inside for at least 250 years, eating the insects that would eat the books.
2. Pay €3 for the Sé Velha
Sancho I, Portugal's second king, was crowned in the Sé Velha in 1185. Entry is €3; summer hours were 09:30–18:30, Sundays from 11:00. It's on the way down, so you don't have to plan it.
3. Find the first king in Santa Cruz
Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, is buried in the Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, right in the Baixa.
4. Don't cross the river for Santa Clara-a-Velha
The Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha is temporarily closed for works. Mondego floods drove the nuns out in 1677; the river came back as recently as December 2019. See it from the fence.
5. Give the Quinta das Lágrimas an hour
The Quinta das Lágrimas gardens are €3.50, Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–19:00 until 15 October and 10:00–17:00 after. Storms Kristin and Leonardo did heavy damage this year, and the foundation is asking for visitors.
6. Take children to Portugal dos Pequenitos
Portugal dos Pequenitos is the country in miniature, designed by Cassiano Branco and begun in 1938.
7. Walk the Botanical Garden before 17:30
The Botanical Garden keeps winter hours from 1 October, 09:00–17:30.
My order: Joanina at the first slot, the Sé Velha on the way down, Santa Cruz to finish.
Goat in red wine, bones in an alley, convent pastry
1. Order chanfana
Old goat soaked overnight in red wine, garlic and bay leaf, then cooked for hours in a sealed clay pot in a wood oven. It's the dish I'd travel for.
2. Eat at Zé Manel dos Ossos
Zé Manel dos Ossos is a traditional tasca down an alley. Spiced bones, wild boar stew, roast goat. Lunch 12:00–15:00, dinner 19:30–22:00, closed Saturday and Sunday evenings.
3. Have coffee in a 1530 church
Café Santa Cruz was built as a church in 1530 and has been a café since 1923. Closed on Sundays.
4. Buy pastéis de Santa Clara
Crisp pastry around an egg-yolk and almond filling, first made at the Santa Clara convent. Pair it with an arrufada, a soft round bun with cinnamon and fennel, and finish with manjar branco, milk and rice set with cinnamon or lemon.
The classic mistake is leaving without the chanfana.
Tin cans on 4 October, ribbons in May
1. Avoid the Baixa on 4 October 2026
The Festa das Latas parade starts at 15:00 that Sunday, with closures from 10:00 from the Alta down Avenida Sá da Bandeira to the Portagem. The Metrobus stops between Loja do Cidadão and Praça da República from 12:00.
2. Expect closures for Queima das Fitas
The end-of-year student festival comes in May. In 2026 its parade on 24 May closed Rua Larga, Largo D. Dinis and the Santa Clara bridge from noon. The 2027 dates aren't out.
3. Mark 4 July 2027
It's the Rainha Santa Isabel holiday. In 2026 the city festival ran from 3 to 19 July; the 2027 programme isn't published.
I'd park at Convento São Francisco on parade days and walk over the bridge.
