A cathedral that rings early, a dragon that isn't, a villa you book in spring
Everything in the old town is a short walk up from Domini Park. If you only have an afternoon: Petrov, the Old Town Hall passage, and the ossuary under St James.
1. Be under Petrov at 11:00
The bells of the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul ring noon at 11:00. The tower is 60 Kč, and the cathedral is the one on the 10-crown coin.
2. Look up in the Old Town Hall passage
Under the crooked Gothic turret of the Old Town Hall hang the Brno dragon, which is a stuffed crocodile, and a wooden wheel. The 63-metre tower is 75 Kč, tickets at the door only.
3. Catch a marble at the clock
The clock on náměstí Svobody was unveiled in 2010 and drops a glass marble at 11:00. Locals have ruder names for its shape. It's free, and the scramble is the show.
4. Book Tugendhat months ahead
Villa Tugendhat, by Mies van der Rohe, 1929–30, is on the UNESCO list. The basic tour is 450 Kč, and the city's tourist board says to book two to three months ahead. Turn up without a slot and you'll see the garden.
5. Go down to the St James ossuary
Under the Church of St James lie the remains of over 50,000 people, Europe's second-largest ossuary after Paris. It opened to the public in 2012.
6. Climb Špilberk, then go under it
Špilberk Castle looks down on the whole city. Dug into the rock below it is the 10-Z bunker, a Cold War shelter built for up to 500 people.
The 11:00 double, bells and marble, is the one thing I'd plan the day around.
Coffee from 1937, wine from the south, beer by the market
1. Order the Moravian classics
Svíčková is beef in a sweet cream-and-root-vegetable sauce with dumplings and cranberries. Vepřo knedlo zelo is roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut. Finish with a koláč, the round Moravian pastry.
2. Drink South Moravian wine
South Moravia is the Czech wine region, and Brno is its city. Klára Bára Wine Café won the wine-bar category in the city's own gourmet guide.
3. Eat cake at Zeman
Zemanova kavárna has been a café and cake shop since 1937; the house cake is the Veletržní dort, the "trade fair cake".
4. Have a beer on Dominikánská
Pivovarský dům Poupě won the city guide's beer category. After it, Slast is on the market square itself.
My pick is a glass of Moravian white at Klára Bára: that's what Brno has and Prague doesn't.
Two Christmas openings and a Grand Prix with no date
1. Come after 13 November
The Christmas markets open on 13 November 2026 on Zelný trh and Moravské náměstí. The main square, Dominikánské náměstí and the Old Town Hall courtyard follow on 27 November, when the tree is lit. I'd park at P+R and take the tram.
2. Watch for the MotoGP date
The Grand Prix of Czechia ran at Automotodrom Brno, about 16 km out, on 19–21 June 2026. I couldn't confirm a 2027 date.
