Driving in? Where to park

Best parking bet

Bolzano Centro (P8): €2 an hour 08:00–20:00, €1.20 at night, €20 for 24 hours, height 2.00 m, five minutes' walk to Piazza Walther. Cheaper: the Fiera roof, first two hours free, then €0.50 an hour.

Watch out

24-hour ZTL over the whole old town. The tourist office lists a ban for Euro 0, Euro 1, Euro 2 diesel and Euro 3 diesel cars on weekdays 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–19:00. Winter tyres or chains 15 November–15 April.

01 · Sights

An iceman, a 300-metre arcade and a cable car up to 1,221 m

Everything below is inside the ZTL or a short walk from Bolzano Centro, so park once. I'd give the Iceman the morning and the Renon the afternoon.

1. Book Ötzi before the queue forms

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology keeps the 5,300-year-old Iceman, found in 1991, in a cell at about −6 °C. Adults pay €13; it's open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00 and on Mondays only in July and August.

2. Walk the full length of the arcades

The Via dei Portici runs 300 m between Piazza delle Erbe and the town hall square. A typical arcade house is about 4 m wide and 50 m deep, which is why the shops go so far back.

3. Start at Piazza Walther

Piazza Walther was laid out in 1808 under Bavarian rule. The statue of the minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide dates from 1889, and the cathedral's steeple rises 65 m at the corner.

4. Read the Victory Monument's basement

The Monument to Victory went up in 1928. Since 2014 an exhibition underneath tells the city's story under two dictatorships. Entry is free, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00.

5. Ride the Renon cable car

From the Renon cable car station it's 12 minutes from 270 m to 1,221 m, €8 one way or €13 return. Parking Ribo next door is €20 for 24 hours.

6. Check Firmian's season first

Messner Mountain Museum Firmian sits in a castle first recorded in 945. Adults pay €15; it's closed on Thursdays, and the 2026 season ends on 8 November.

02 · Food

Rye-flour pasta, dumplings three ways, chestnuts on the square

1. Order Schlutzkrapfen first

Half-moons of rye and wheat dough filled with spinach, served with melted butter and Parmesan. It's the dish I'd judge a kitchen by.

2. Try Knödel three ways

Bread dumplings come in broth, dry with butter and sage, or next to goulash. A good one is light, not rubbery.

3. Eat at Vögele, never on a Sunday

Wirtshaus Vögele is in the Michelin guide for regional cooking: Knödel, Fleischgröstl and Schmarren with blueberries. It's closed on Sundays. A food blog dates the house to 1277; I can't confirm that.

4. Shop Piazza delle Erbe before lunch on Saturday

The Piazza delle Erbe market runs Monday to Saturday 07:00–19:00, but only until 13:00 on Saturdays. In autumn you'll find roasted chestnuts, called Keschtn here. Nadamas is the pub on the square.

5. Have barley soup on a cold day

It's cooked slowly with a pork knuckle. Order a Speck, sausage and cheese platter to share.

03 · Festivals

The Christmas market opens on 26 November

1. Don't drive to Piazza Walther in Advent

The Christmas market runs 26 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, opening at 17:00 on the first day. It's closed on 25 December and shuts early on 24 and 31 December. No 2026 traffic plan was out when I checked.

2. Expect garages to fill and diversions

In 2023 a city ordinance diverted cars to Bolzano Centro, then the Fiera, once central garages hit 90%. In 2022 a free weekend shuttle ran from the Fiera to Piazza Verdi. I'd arrive by 10:00 or come by train.

3. Watch for the race on 31 December

The BOclassic New Year's Eve race is held in town that day, and the market closes at 18:00.

4. Hear San Nicolò on 6 December

He comes to Piazza Walther, followed by the Krampus.

04 · History

Prince-bishops, a treaty and a monument in marble

1. Date the town to its arcades

The Prince-Bishops of Trento built the arcades around 1170, and that's taken as the town's founding.

2. Remember 1919 when you hear German

The Treaty of Saint-Germain gave South Tyrol to Italy in 1919. Italianisation followed under fascism, and in 1927 Bolzano became a provincial capital.

3. Thank Claudia de' Medici for the merchants

In 1635 she founded the mercantile magistrate, which later became the chamber of commerce.
