A castle on a cliff, an island you reach by oar, a gorge on boardwalks
Bled is small enough to do on foot from P03. If you have one day, I'd do the castle in the morning, the island at midday and the lake loop before dinner.
1. Walk up to the castle
Bled Castle costs €19 for an adult. Its own car park, 50 m from the gate, is €3 for every started hour. The castle site describes a ten-minute footpath from the natural bathing area instead.
2. Take a pletna from Mlino
The pletna is a flat wooden boat rowed standing. From the Mlino pier the tourist board gives €20 an adult, €10 a child for the trip to the island. On the island, people ring the bell in the church for luck.
3. Walk the whole shore
The lake is 2,120 m long, and the lakeside path makes a full loop. The section by the south-shore roadworks reopened before Christmas 2025.
4. Book Vintgar ahead
Vintgar Gorge is 1.6 km of boardwalks over the Radovna, open to visitors since 1893. Tickets are sold in time slots on the official site, which I couldn't open; guides disagree on the price, €10 or €15.
5. Look down from Straža
Straža hill rises to 646 m right above the lake. It's the short climb for the classic view of island and castle together.
6. Have a coffee at Tito's villa
Tito built his residence at Vila Bled in 1947. I'd come for the view across to the island, not for the politics.
A cream cake from 1953 and sausage on Grajska cesta
1. Eat the cream cake at Kavarna Park
The kremna rezina is puff pastry, vanilla cream and whipped cream under icing sugar. Kavarna Park has made it since 1953, to a recipe by pastry chef Ištvan Lukačevič. The tourist board counts 16 million sold. Open 11:00 to 19:00 in winter, to 21:00 from May to September.
2. Order Carniolan sausage at Pri Planincu
Gostilna Pri Planincu has been a family inn since 1929 and opens daily 12:00–21:30. Kranjska klobasa, the Carniolan sausage, is on the menu with cheese dumplings, venison goulash and pumpkin soup.
3. Skip the front-row terrace
On the promenade you pay for the view of the island. I'd take the cake at Kavarna Park and the dinner up the hill.
Winter lights, a summer bus and a lake full of candles
1. Expect crowds at the Winter Fairy Tale
The Winter Fairy Tale (Zimska pravljica) fills the lakeside from late November. The 2024/25 edition ran 29 November to 5 January; the 2026/27 dates weren't out when I checked.
2. Use the Bled Bus from June
In 2026 the Bled Bus ran from 1 June, daily on all lines in July and August, for €5 a day. The 2027 timetable isn't published.
3. Watch for Bled Days in July
During Bled Days (Blejski dnevi) the lake is lit by about 15,000 candles in eggshells. The 2027 dates aren't published.
