Driving in? Where to park

Best parking bet

The Park & Ride by the station: 12 zł a day, and the ticket is also 24 hours on the city buses (city card site, April 2025). In the street, subzone B caps a full day at 45 zł.

Watch out

Paid every day, 08:00–21:00, since 2 December 2025. Subzone A is 8, 9.60, 11.50, then 8 zł an hour with no cap. Unpaid: 300 zł, or 120 zł within three days.

01 · Sights

A wooden-villa style, two lifts and a lake you have to book

Most of town is walkable from the Park & Ride; the mountains need a lift, a bus or a booked parking slot. If I had one day, it would be Koliba in the morning and Gubałówka at sunset.

1. Start at Villa Koliba

Villa Koliba was the first building Stanisław Witkiewicz designed in the Zakopane style, in 1892–93. It's closed on Tuesdays and free on Thursdays.

2. Do the Tatra Museum on a Thursday

The Tatra Museum main building opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00. The permanent exhibitions are free on Thursdays, and that's the day I'd go.

3. Ride Gubałówka online, not at the window

The Gubałówka funicular climbs 299 m in three minutes. From 1 October to 18 December a return is 37 zł online, 42 zł at the counter.

4. Book Kasprowy for the first car up

The Kasprowy Wierch cable car from Kuźnice takes about 20 minutes, changing at Myślenickie Turnie. A low-season return is 129 zł; tickets arrive by email or text.

5. Book Morskie Oko's car park first

Palenica Białczańska is online booking only, 36–75 zł a car, and you don't choose the section: late arrivals land at Łysa Polana, 1.5 km back. Park entry is another 11 zł a person. I'd book two days out, before the price climbs.

6. Look up at Wielka Krokiew

The Wielka Krokiew ski jump hosts the World Cup on 16–17 January 2027, if FIS keeps the provisional calendar.

Skip Krupówki at 18:00 in August; I'd walk it at 08:00 instead.

02 · Food

Sheep's cheese only from May to September

1. Buy oscypek in season

Real oscypek is a protected cheese made May to September only, at most 40% cow's milk, 17–23 cm long. A winter "oscypek" on a market stall breaks that rule. The Gubałówka market is the classic place to buy one.

2. Try the small cheeses too

Redykołka is the 30–60 g little sister, spindle-shaped or moulded. Bryndza podhalańska is a soft sheep's cheese, also May to September.

3. Order lamb at Wyżnio

Bąkowo Zohylina Wyżnio sits at the edge of the national park and is proud of its lamb: neck stew, and chops on a hot stone. It's my pick for a long dinner after a hike.

4. Eat kwaśnica on Krupówki

Kwaśnica, a sour sauerkraut soup, and placki (potato pancakes) are the highland staples. Karczma Zapiecek is the one I'd pick on the main street.

03 · Festivals

Ski jumping weekend, then six weeks of school holidays

1. Avoid town on 16–17 January 2027

The ski-jumping World Cup is pencilled in for those dates: team event Saturday, individual Sunday. The calendar was still awaiting FIS approval when published.

2. Plan around the ferie waves

Polish winter school holidays run in three waves from 18 January to 28 February 2027. Warsaw's region breaks 1–14 February, Małopolska 15–28 February. Those are the weeks I'd avoid on the zakopianka.

3. Expect Palenica to restart in March

TPN says Palenica runs dawn to dusk from 1 March to 30 November. Winter rules aren't published.

04 · History

Who really won Morskie Oko

1. Don't call it a win over Slovakia

On 13 September 1902 a tribunal in Graz gave Morskie Oko to Galicia. The losing side was Hungary; Slovakia didn't exist yet, and both sides were inside Austria-Hungary.

2. Thank Witkiewicz for the look

Stanisław Witkiewicz drew his style from Podhale highland building, not from Swiss or Tyrolean chalets. Koliba was the first house built to it.

3. Remember the funicular took 168 days

The Gubałówka line was built in 1938 in 168 days, and it still climbs from the edge of Krupówki.
