A rebuilt Old Town, a Stalin-era tower, and Chopin on Sundays
Warsaw rewards a walk from the castle down the Royal Route, with one museum stop for the city's 1944. Park once and do it on foot.
1. Read the Old Town as a rebuild
The Old Town Market Square was over 85% destroyed in August 1944 and rebuilt. UNESCO listed it in 1980 precisely as a reconstruction. Come early in the morning, before the tour groups.
2. Find Bellotto's views in the castle
The Royal Castle was rebuilt 1971–1984, paid for largely by donations. Inside, the Canaletto Room hangs Bernardo Bellotto's views of 18th-century Warsaw. That's the room I'd make time for.
3. Go up the Palace of Culture
The terrace of the Palace of Culture and Science is on the 30th floor, 114 m up; the normal ticket is 30 zł. Go near sunset; I think it's the best view of the city.
4. Give the Uprising Museum two hours
The Warsaw Rising Museum screens City of Ruins, a reconstructed flight over the city in 1945. Watch it last. Its own notices list Tuesday as the closed day, so check before you go.
5. Walk the Royal Route at the weekend
Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat have been closed to cars on warm-season weekends, from Rondo de Gaulle'a to Castle Square. It's the best walk in the city when the traffic is gone.
6. Hear Chopin free in Łazienki
At the Chopin Monument, pianists play every Sunday at 12:00 and 16:00 in season, free. In 2025 the season ran 11 May to 7 September. Bring something to sit on.
Pierogi at a milk bar, pączki on Nowy Świat
1. Eat lunch at a milk bar
A bar mleczny is a cheap canteen with a tray and a counter. Prasowy is the one I'd pick; Bar Bambino is the other classic. Order at the till, collect at the hatch.
2. Order pierogi and a sour soup
Pierogi ruskie are filled with potato and curd cheese. Żurek is sour rye soup, often with sausage and egg. Barszcz is clear beetroot soup, and kotlet schabowy is the breaded pork chop on every lunch menu.
3. Buy a pączek from Blikle
Pączki are rose-jam doughnuts. A. Blikle has made them on Nowy Świat since 1869; in 2017 the counter moved next door to no. 33. On Fat Thursday the queue is the event.
Skip the restaurants on the Market Square itself. You're paying for the square.
Sirens at five, and a free Sunday piano
1. Stop at 17:00 on 1 August
Every year at 17:00 on 1 August, the hour the 1944 Uprising began, sirens sound and the city stands still for a minute. Traffic stops too. Don't plan a drive through the centre then.
2. Plan Sundays May to September for Chopin
The free Łazienki concerts run Sundays from May. The 2027 dates aren't out yet; in 2025 it was 11 May to 7 September.
3. Queue on Fat Thursday
Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek) falls on 4 February 2027. Every bakery queues for pączki.
