Driving in? Where to park

Best parking bet

The P+R combi ticket: €8.50 for the car and a same-day return on the tram or bus for up to five people. P+R Westraven has 1,385 spaces and a tram to the centre in about 12 minutes. The inner-centre kerb is €8.01 an hour.

Watch out

The inner centre is charged until 01:00 and on Sunday 12:00–18:00, and the city says there is no longer any exception for public holidays. The P+R combi discount needs an OV-chipkaart or U-OV card — OVpay does not qualify.

First look

Bicycles by the ten thousand, and one tower over everything

Under the station square is the bicycle parking ProRail calls the largest in the world, 12,500 spaces, the first 24 hours free. That tells you who this city is built for.

Everything else answers to the Dom tower: 112.32 metres, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, visible from every approach road. I use it as a compass and never need the satnav once I am on foot.

Tourist traps

The kerb that charges on Sunday, and the card that does not count

The classic mistake is assuming Sunday is free. In zone A1 it is charged from 12:00 to 18:00, and on public holidays like any weekday. A day card on the street is €56.13; the Jaarbeurs car parks by the station charge €31 for the same day.

The second trap is at the park and ride. The combi discount works only with an OV-chipkaart or a U-OV card. Check in with a contactless bank card or phone — OVpay — and it does not count. My advice: buy the card before you drive in.

Local pick

Light on the canals after dark

The Trajectum Lumen route is a 3-kilometre walk of light art through the old centre, lit every evening from sunset to midnight, starting at the Winkel van Utrecht on the Domplein. I walk it after dinner, when the day visitors have gone and the wharves are quiet.

Survival rule

Leave by one, and check in last in the centre

The combi ticket has three conditions and people miss the third. Check in and out with an OV-chipkaart or U-OV card; make your last check-in in the centre, so the system sees a return trip; and drive out by 01:00. Break any of them and the barrier charges the normal rate — €3 an hour at Westraven, capped at €15.02.

01 · Sights

A tower without its church, and a house with no fixed walls

Dom tower — 465 steps, guided climbs only, from the Domplein. Restored between 2018 and 2024. The gap between the tower and the church is the point: see the history below.

Rietveld Schröderhuis — €19, a time slot compulsory even with a museum card, UNESCO-listed since 2000. Walls slide, the plan changes; book before you drive.

The Oudegracht wharves — 4 kilometres of quays below street level, which the city calls unique in the world, with more than 700 wharf cellars restored since 2000. Walk the lower level.

Nijntje museum — Miffy's museum, €14 for adults, booking required; built for the under-sixes.

Museum Speelklok — €18.50, mechanical organs and music boxes that are played for you.

Kasteel de Haar — €21.50 for castle and park, parking €7.50 paid at the exit; the one day trip where the car is the right tool.

02 · Food

A chocolate Dom tower, and a cellar on the canal

At Banketbakkerij Theo Blom the Domtorentjes, chocolate bonbons with the tower in relief, have been made since 1922, and the Utrecht sprits — butter biscuits — follow Pieter Bergman's recipe of 1888. Open Monday 08:00–17:00, Tuesday to Friday to 18:00, Saturday to 17:00.

For dinner, De Werfkring has cooked vegetarian on the wharves since 1976, Monday to Saturday 17:00–21:00, no alcohol. For a beer I go down to the wharf cellar at vandeStreek, twenty taps below street level.

03 · Festivals

A run round the canal, and a free market that takes the whole centre

The TREK Singelloop, which calls itself the oldest street race in the Netherlands, is on 4 October 2026, with the Croeselaan closed 05:00–15:00. Le Guess Who? runs 5–8 November 2026. The GetAway, the old Vakantiebeurs, fills the Jaarbeurs on 7–10 January 2027 — and its car parks. On King's Night, the evening of 26 April, the free market takes over the centre; in 2026 it was car-free from 15:00 the day before and cars had to be gone.

04 · History

The canal that was a motorway, and is a canal again

On 1 August 1674 a storm tore through north-west Europe and brought down the nave of the Dom church. The tower stood, and the gap between them has been a square ever since.

Three centuries later the city did something to its own water. The Catharijnesingel, part of the ring canal, was filled in during the 1970s for a road. On 12 September 2020 the ring was reopened as water, and the city's own announcement calls it unique that a road with room for twelve lanes made way for water and green. I drive past it knowing which side won.
