Sorrento's centre is a camera-controlled ZTL from 1 April to 25 October, every evening from 19:30 to 04:00, according to two reports of the 2026 ordinance. One wrong turn past a gate is €83 to €332 under the national road code.
My plan: drive straight into the municipal Achille Lauro car park before the evening, pay €2 an hour, and walk. For Capri, I'd use the garage at Marina Piccola instead.
Parking in Sorrento: Achille Lauro at €2 an hour, or the port garage
1. Arrive before 19:30 in summer
Two reports of the 2026 ordinance, signed by police commander Rosa Russo, give 1 April to 25 October, 19:30–04:00 daily, plus 10:00–13:00 on public holidays. Two parking guides say "after 19:30 and all day Sunday". I couldn't read the ordinance itself, so I'd treat Sunday mornings as closed too.
2. Know the four camera gates
The gates are at Fuorimura (start of Viale Caruso), Corso Italia by the Carmine church at Piazza Tasso, Via Correale at the Achille Lauro entrance, and San Francesco at Via Luigi De Maio. The zone runs from the car park towards Piazza Tasso, so leave Achille Lauro the way you came, away from the square.
3. Park at Achille Lauro for the day
The municipal car park under Piazza Lauro charges €2 an hour, free under 30 minutes. The day rate is €24 on the Italian page of one guide and €25 on its English page; another guide gives €24–30. Nine to six is €18, under the cap. Height isn't published.
4. Use Marina Piccola for Capri
The port garage at Marina Piccola lists a medium car at €26 for 6 hours, €28 for 12, €32 for 24; another guide gives €24 and €30. Garage Il Faro nearby allows 2.10 m but isn't open round the clock.
5. Treat blue lines as a two-hour stop
Blue bays are €1 for 30 minutes, €2 an hour at the meter, one guide says; another gives €2–3 and 08:00–20:00. Ten hours at €2 is €20, no cheaper than the garage. The comune publishes no tariff I could read. An unpaid bay is €42 to €173 in Italy.
The classic mistake is following the satnav to a hotel in the old town at 20:00. That's the camera on Corso Italia.

Towed in Sorrento: Sorrento names no pound, so ring the police
1. Call the Polizia Locale first
The comune lists the local police on 081 8074433. Sorrento publishes no tow tariff, pound address or hours that I could find. Article 159 lets each town set its own price, and I won't borrow Naples's.
2. Pay a ZTL fine within five days
A camera entry is €83; paid within five days of the notice, article 202 cuts it to €58.10. A hire company adds its own fee, €31.72 at Avis. One wrong turn on a rental is about €90, or €114.72 if you're slow. The letter can take up to 360 days to reach a foreign address.
3. Ask your hotel to register the plate
Hotel guests are on the exempt list, but the hotel has to enter the plate. Send the full registration with the booking. For other temporary passes, one report gives the police's free line, 800 477 311.
Four gates and a short season. I'd still plan around them.
If your car has disappeared
- Who took it
- The Polizia Locale (municipal police) of Sorrento, which also runs the ZTL cameras. Article 159 of the road code lets each comune set its own removal price; Sorrento publishes none that I could find
- Phone
- Polizia Locale Sorrento (listed by tuttitalia): 081 8074433
Municipal police free line for temporary ZTL passes (one news report): 800 477 311
Emergency: 112 - Collect it at
- No car pound address is published. Ask the Polizia Locale where the car went.
- Hours
- Not published.
- What it costs
- Tow and storage: not published. ZTL camera entry €83–332 (€58.10 if €83 is paid within five days); unpaid blue line €42–173. A hire company adds its own handling fee (Avis €31.72).
- Bring
- Nothing is listed for visitors. I would bring my licence, passport and the rental agreement, and ring the hire company first.
EV charging in Sorrento: Sorrento lists no public chargers
1. Charge before the peninsula
I found no official list of public chargers in Sorrento, and none of the guides I read named one. Garage Il Faro says it has no charging points.
2. Ask the hotel, in writing
With nothing published, the hotel is your best bet. Ask whether the charger is free and whether you need your own cable.
I'd arrive with 80% and not count on topping up here.
Where to charge
- No published public chargers — Sorrento town; the comune publishes no charger list I could find. None of the guides I read named a public charger, and Garage Il Faro says it has none. Ask the hotel, in writing, before you arrive
Free parking in Sorrento: Free bays are rare; the car-free days are better
1. Try Via Rota or Via Parsano
Two guides name white-line bays on Via Rota, a fair walk out, and Via Parsano, close to Corso Italia. Both say spaces are very scarce.
2. There's no park and ride
Sorrento has no official park and ride. Private garages on the edge are the closest thing: Fuorimura Parking, about €2.50 an hour, from €27 a day, outside the ZTL from Via degli Aranci, and Sorrento Parking, €3 an hour, from €27, with a shuttle.
3. Leave the SS163 to the bus
Since 2019 ANAS has run alternate-plate days on the Amalfi road between 10:00 and 18:00. On odd dates plates ending in an odd digit can't drive; on even dates, even ones. In 2026 it ran over Easter, late April and October weekends, and ended on 31 October. The 2027 calendar isn't out.
4. Check what counts as your "last digit"
Hotel guests are exempt on arrival and departure days; a self-drive hire car on a day trip is not. The rule speaks of the last digit, and many foreign plates end in a letter. ANAS doesn't say how those are treated. I'd take the SITA bus or a ferry rather than test it.
Prices on this page were checked on 2 November 2026; none of them is free.
Free or nearly-free spots
White lines on Via Rota and Via Parsano
Two guides name free white-line bays on Via Rota (a fair walk out) and Via Parsano (near Corso Italia). Both say spaces are very scarce.
No park and ride: edge garages instead
Sorrento has no official park and ride. Fuorimura Parking (about €2.50 an hour, from €27 a day) sits outside the ZTL from Via degli Aranci; Sorrento Parking on Via San Renato (€3 an hour, from €27) runs a shuttle on request. No public bus ticket is included.
Car-free days: SITA bus, ferry, Circumvesuviana
For the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Naples, leave the car parked and use the SITA bus, the ferries from Marina Piccola or the Circumvesuviana train. I could not read an official fare page for any of them, so no prices here.
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- ZTL hours come from two secondary reports of the 2026 ordinance (1 April–25 October, 19:30–04:00, holidays also 10:00–13:00). Two parking guides say 'after 19:30 and all day Sunday'. I could not open the comune's page; the signs at the gates win.
- The Via Correale gate is at the entrance to Achille Lauro car park, and the zone includes the approach from the car park towards Piazza Tasso. Leave the way you came.
- SS163 Amalfi road: ANAS alternate-plate days, 10:00–18:00, odd dates ban plates ending in an odd digit. 2026's last day was 31 October; the 2027 calendar is unpublished. Hotel guests are exempt on arrival and departure days, day-trip hire cars are not, and ANAS does not say how plates ending in a letter count.
- A one-source report says the ZTL also runs from 7 December to 6 January on holidays and the days before them. Unconfirmed officially.
- Height limits are unpublished except Garage Il Faro (2.10 m). Ring ahead with a van or roof box.
