A castle well, Dürer's door and a fountain that's a copy
Everything inside the walls is a walk from the Hauptmarkt or Jakobsmarkt car parks. Short on time? Do the castle, Dürer's house, then a bratwurst.
1. Buy the castle ticket at the gate
The Kaiserburg sells its €10 all-in ticket only at the cashier in the outer courtyard, cash or card, with no online sales. The deep well and Sinwell Tower alone are €4, and under-18s go free. The tower view over the roofs is the reason I'd pay.
2. See Dürer's house on an Advent Monday
The Albrecht-Dürer-Haus on Tiergärtnertorplatz opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00. It also opens on Mondays from July to September and during the Christmas market, handy if you're here in Advent.
3. Turn the ring, then admit it's a copy
The Schöner Brunnen was built between 1385 and 1396. What stands on the Hauptmarkt now is an early-20th-century copy in shell limestone. The legend says one turn of the golden ring grants a wish.
4. Find the real fountain indoors
The weathered originals of those figures are in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, the tourist board says. Seeing them after the square is the better order.
5. Don't go to Courtroom 600 on Tuesday
The Memorium Nuremberg Trials closes every Tuesday. The courtroom hasn't held a hearing since March 2020, but events can still close it, so check the day.
6. Go back to the rally grounds now
At the Documentation Centre, the new permanent exhibition opened in trial operation on 22 May 2026. It's the first time since 2020 the whole building has been open.
7. Go underground before lunch
The Historic Rock-Cut Cellars tour is €13 and about an hour, from in front of the brewery shop.
If I had one afternoon: Kaiserburg tower, then the Documentation Centre.
Three in a roll, beech smoke and a claim from 1312
1. Order Drei im Weggla
Three little sausages in a bread roll with mustard. The name Nürnberger Rostbratwurst is protected by EU rules and tied to the city, and each one is only about 7–9 cm.
2. Eat by the beech fire
Bratwursthäusle grills its own sausages over beech wood. Monday to Saturday 11:00–22:00, Sunday until 20:00.
3. Choose your count at Röslein
Bratwurst Röslein serves 6, 8, 10, 12 or 20 on sauerkraut or potato salad, daily 11:00–22:30. It calls itself the largest bratwurst house in the world.
4. Save room for Schäufele
Pork shoulder roasted for hours until the crust cracks, served with potato dumplings. For later, Lebkuchen is nuts, honey and spice.
5. Drink red beer at the Altstadthof
Hausbrauerei Altstadthof still uses part of the rock cellars under it. I'd book the cellar tour first, then drink the beer.
My order: six at the beech fire, then Schäufele somewhere else the next day.
Advent crowds, two Volksfests and match-day buses
1. Leave the car out of Advent
The Christkindlesmarkt runs 27 November to 24 December 2026, daily 10:00–21:00 and until 14:00 on Christmas Eve. The Christkind opens it on 27 November at 17:30. The city plainly advises against coming by car. No special old-town access closures were published when I checked.
2. Check which Volksfest dates are right
The city gives 27 March–18 April 2027 for spring and 27 August–12 September 2027 for autumn, at Dutzendteich. The showmen's association lists 11 April and 11 September as the last days. I'd trust the city's dates and avoid the closing weekend for driving. Parking is paid on Große Straße, at the Meistersingerhalle and on Schultheißallee.
3. Use your match ticket as a bus pass
The Max-Morlock-Stadion holds 50,000 and has 12,000 parking spaces around it. A 1. FC Nürnberg ticket is a VGN travel pass from five hours before kick-off until 03:00, through the 2026/27 season.
Match day plus Volksfest is the one weekend I wouldn't drive south of the centre.
