Scooters in every gap, a crater under Via Toledo
At a Naples traffic light the scooters fill the gaps on both sides of your car, then leave before you do. Under Via Toledo, the metro station that opened in 2012 drops you past a round "crater of light" cut through the ceiling. Down at the Molo Beverello, ferries for Capri and Ischia leave all day.
An hour's queue for two pizzas, and San Gregorio Armeno on a December Saturday
I would not stand an hour in the lunchtime queue at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele. The menu is two pizzas, margherita and marinara, and you take a numbered ticket and wait. Arrive at the 10:30 opening, or eat at Starita.
My second skip is Via San Gregorio Armeno, the nativity-figure street, on a Saturday afternoon in December. The lane is narrow and the crowd shuffles. A weekday morning gives you the same workshops with room to look.
Starita a Materdei, fried and then baked
Starita a Materdei has made pizza in the Materdei quarter since 1901, and Sophia Loren played a pizza-maker there for De Sica's L'oro di Napoli. Order the montanara: the dough is fried, topped with tomato and smoked provola, then finished in the oven. It is a short walk from the Archaeological Museum; I do the museum in the morning and the montanara for lunch.
Pay the meter, not the man in the vest
Unofficial attendants (parcheggiatori abusivi) point you at a space and expect a coin or two. It is illegal, it buys you nothing, and the blue-line fine still applies if the meter is unpaid. In September 2026 the carabinieri reported six of them on Via Orsini and Via Cuoco, and names the Vomero and Chiaia too. My rule: if someone waves me in, I drive on to a garage.
Veiled marble, San Gennaro's blood, an old road under Via Toledo
The Veiled Christ in the Cappella Sansevero is the one sight I would book ahead. Giuseppe Sanmartino carved the marble shroud in 1753, and it looks wet. Closed on Tuesdays.
The Duomo keeps the blood of San Gennaro, which the faithful wait to see liquefy three times a year. Walk in: Via Duomo is a ZTL gate.
Via dei Tribunali is car-free round the clock and lined with pizzerias; walk it all before choosing.
Toledo metro station is worth a ticket even if you are going nowhere. Óscar Tusquets designed it; there are works by William Kentridge and Robert Wilson, and a stretch of ancient road you can stand on.
Castel dell'Ovo sits on its islet off Borgo Marinari, pedestrian at all hours. Walk there at sunset along the seafront.
Two-pizza menus and the fried montanara
Neapolitan pizza is soft in the middle; in the street it comes folded in four as a portafoglio. At Da Michele, serving since 1870, the choice is margherita or marinara, which saves time once you are in.
For something the rest of Europe does not make, Starita does the montanara, fried then baked, and angioletti, fried dough sticks. I would take the montanara over any margherita in town.
Breakfast is a sfogliatella: shell-shaped, crackling, ricotta inside.
Blood in December, silver busts in May
From 8 December to 6 January, guides say Chiaia gets a Christmas ZTL on Via Morelli, Via Filangieri and Via dei Mille, on weekends and holidays 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00. Park before ten, or at Brin.
On Wednesday 16 December 2026 the Duomo shows the blood again, in memory of the Vesuvius eruption of 1631.
On Saturday 1 May 2027, the Saturday before the first Sunday in May, the saint's bust and the city's silver patron busts go in procession from the Duomo to Santa Chiara on Piazza del Gesù. I would come by metro.
