Driving in? Where to park

Best parking bet

P+R Maastricht Noord is free. Bus 10 runs to the centre every 15 minutes, about 12 minutes, €2.55 return per person or €6.40 for a group of three to five.

Watch out

Thursday is paid until 21:00, Sundays and public holidays 12:00–18:00. The centre rate jumps from €3.70 to €5.30 after the first hours at many spots. Unpaid: €82 plus one hour.

First look

7,000 spaces, a Belgian border and a bus every quarter of an hour

Maastricht Bereikbaar counts about 7,000 parking spaces in the city, and signs on the approach roads show in colour which part of town still has room. The city limits are an international border with Belgium, so a wrong turn south can put you in another country. On an ordinary weekday the Noord bus comes so often that I stop reading the timetable.

Tourist traps

A whole day under the Vrijthof, and the garage that will not take a ticket

Everyone heads for the garage under the Vrijthof, and for an hour it makes sense. For a day it is €35, against a flat €14 at Stadspark or €8.30 at Fort Willem, each about ten minutes' walk away. I wouldn't leave a car under the square from morning to night.

The second is Q-Park Entre Deux, by the shopping streets. Q-Park says you can park there only with its app or an online booking, and the clearance is 1.90 m.

Local pick

Spelt vlaai beside the mill wheel on the Jeker

De Bisschopsmolen is a bakery in a water mill on the Jeker that the tourist board dates to the 11th century. Order a slice of spelt vlaai, the Limburg fruit tart, then take the Bisschopsmolengang alley round to the back to see the wheel. Open Tuesday to Saturday 08:30–17:00 and Sunday 09:00–17:00; closed on Monday.

Survival rule

On Thursday the meter runs until nine

On Thursday, paid street parking runs from 08:00 to 21:00, not 18:00, because of late-night shopping. There is no ticket for the dashboard: you pay by number plate, at the machine or in an app, so type the plate exactly as it is on the car. A scan car checks, and a miss becomes a bill for €82 plus one hour's tariff, collected by Cannock.

01 · Sights

A bookshop in a Dominican stable, and the Helpoort gate from 1230

Vrijthof — the biggest square in the city, lined with cafés. Take a terrace table facing the basilica.

Basilica of Saint Servatius — Romanesque, with the saint's tomb in the crypt. Look at the sculpted south portal before you go in.

Boekhandel Dominicanen — a Gothic church the French used as a horse stable after 1794, a bookshop since 2006. It opens on Sunday from 12:00: my rainy-Sunday plan.

Helpoort — two towers built around 1230, the oldest city gate in the Netherlands. Walk through from the Jeker side.

Sint Servaasbrug — the oldest bridge in the Netherlands. Cross on foot to Wyck and look back at the old town.

Grotten Noord — man-made tunnels in old limestone quarries, guided only, about 70 minutes, from €9.95. It is cold down there; bring a jumper.

02 · Food

Vlaai for the back seat, coffee in the Dominicanen choir

The thing to eat here is vlaai, the Limburg fruit tart. I buy mine at the Bisschopsmolen, baked with Limburg grain, and a whole one travels well on the back seat. Also look for zuurvlees, the sweet-sour Limburg beef stew.

For coffee, the former priests' choir of the Dominican church holds Blanche Dael Coffeelovers. For an hour out of the rain I think it is the best seat in the city.

03 · Festivals

The 11th of the 11th, a month of Magisch Maastricht, and TEFAF at MECC

On 11 November 2026 the carnival season opens, and Maastricht Bereikbaar suggests arriving before 10:00 or after 15:00. Magisch Maastricht fills the Vrijthof from 27 November to 27 December 2026: free, 10:00 to midnight, to 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The organisers say Friday to Sunday are busiest, so come midweek.

Carnaval is 7–9 February 2027. In 2026 the barriers to the centre closed from 13:00 to 03:00 on all three days and the Vrijthof was shut to traffic from the Friday before; expect the same and park at Noord. TEFAF, the art fair, runs 13–18 March 2027 at MECC, where parking during the fair is a fixed €21 each time you drive out.

04 · History

D'Artagnan at the Tongerse Poort

On 25 June 1673, during the French siege, Charles de Batz de Castelmore, the comte d'Artagnan, was preparing to storm the city when a musket shot killed him outside the Tongerse Poort. Dumas made him famous in the 19th century, and Maastricht gave him a statue in the Aldenhofpark, the extension of the Stadspark, a short walk from the €14 Park+Walk car park. I pass him on the way back to the car.

The European Council met here in 1991, and the treaty signed a year later created the European Union and the euro.
