Plečnik's river, a 60-second funicular and two sets of dragons
Everything below is inside the car-free centre or on its edge, a short walk from the P+R buses. Half a day? The funicular, the Triple Bridge and the market.
1. Ride the funicular up, walk down
The castle funicular leaves from Krekov trg opposite the market and takes 60 seconds. It's €3.30 one way, €6 return; the castle ticket with the ride is €17.10 online. I'd buy one way and walk down.
2. Cross all three bridges
On the Triple Bridge, the middle span dates from 1842. Plečnik added the two side bridges, opened in April 1932, with 642 balusters between them.
3. Look the dragons in the eye
The Dragon Bridge opened on 4 October 1901, one of Europe's earliest reinforced-concrete bridges. Legend says the dragons wag their tails when a virgin crosses. They're still waiting.
4. Shop under the colonnade
The Central Market building went up between 1940 and 1942. The market is open every day except Sunday; mornings are best.
5. Walk the UNESCO riverbank
Plečnik's work joined the World Heritage List on 28 July 2021: the Ljubljanica embankments from Trnovski pristan to the Sluice Gate, plus Vegova street, Congress Square and Zvezda park.
6. Find the Roman wall
The Roman wall on Mirje is part of the same listing, a stretch of Roman Emona that Plečnik turned into a park.
My pick is the riverbank: it's free and it's the whole city in one walk.
A sausage with papers and soup in a loaf
1. Eat kranjska klobasa standing up
The Carniolan sausage has been EU-protected since 2015, over objections from Austria, Croatia and Germany. Klobasarna serves it with a roll, mustard and fresh horseradish, Monday to Saturday 10:00–23:00, Sunday until 15:00.
2. Order mushroom soup in bread
Gostilna Sokol does mushroom soup in a bread bowl, plus game and Slovenian wine. It opens at 07:00, at 10:00 on Sundays.
3. Leave room for štruklji
Štruklji are rolled dumplings, sweet or savoury. Prekmurska gibanica stacks poppy seed, cottage cheese, walnuts and apple in layers; potica is the rolled nut cake of every Christmas table.
4. Catch the last Open Kitchen
Odprta kuhna, the Friday food market on Pogačarjev trg, runs 10:00–22:00 from 20 March to 9 October 2026. That makes this Friday the last of the season.
I'd do Klobasarna for lunch and Sokol for dinner.
Marathon Sunday and seven weeks of lights
1. Stay out on 18 October 2026
The 30th Ljubljana Marathon closes the centre and the stretch between Aškerčeva and Trg OF from 08:00; everything reopens by 16:00. Roads start closing the evening before too: on Saturday 17 October from 16:00, back to normal across most of the city from 19:00.
2. Come by bus for Festive December
Festive December runs from 27 November 2026, 17:00, to 15 January 2027, with the Christmas market in the centre. I'd leave the car at a P+R and ride in.
3. Don't plan on Open Kitchen in winter
After 9 October 2026 it pauses; the 2027 dates aren't published yet.
