Hamburg has no Umweltzone and, since 13 September 2023, no diesel-ban streets either, so a foreign car needs no sticker here. What it needs is money: the city-centre kerb went up to €4 an hour in May 2026, and central garages cap at €50 a day.
So I'd park once, outside. Any of the 34 official P+R car parks costs €2 for 24 hours. Add an HVV day ticket and the Rathaus is about €10 away.
Parking in Hamburg: €4 at the kerb, €50 under the Hanseviertel
1. Drive in without a green sticker
Hamburg never had an Umweltzone. Its two diesel-ban stretches, 580 m of Max-Brauer-Allee and 1.6 km of Stresemannstraße for lorries, were lifted on 13 September 2023. Bremen does have a zone, so buy the sticker if you drive on.
2. Type your plate into the meter
Hamburg is scrapping paper tickets. You enter your number plate at the machine, or pay by app: EasyPark, Parkster and Yellowbrick all work here. Get the plate exactly right: there's nothing on the dashboard for a warden to read.
3. Learn the four kerb zones
Since the May 2026 rise: Zone 1 (city centre) €4 an hour, Zone 2 €3.50, Zone 3 €3, Zone 4 €2. Day tickets are €12 in Zone 2 and €10 in Zones 3 and 4. Three hours by the Rathaus is €12. Hours and maximum stay are printed on it; Hamburg's own pages blocked me, so I'm not quoting a timetable. No ticket is €20–€40.
4. Budget by the day cap
APCOA's Hanseviertel is €4.50 per started hour, €50 a day, 2.00 m. Westfield Überseequartier in HafenCity prices dynamically at €3–3.50 an hour with a €39 cap, about 2 m, 2,500 spaces. Q-Park's City-Parkhaus prints no walk-up tariff, only online deals; its height is 1.93 m.
5. Pre-book the Elbphilharmonie only past four hours
The Elbphilharmonie garage (APCOA, 297 spaces, 2.10 m) is €5.50 per started hour, €50 a day. The online four-hour flat is €22, exactly what four walk-up hours cost. It only pays if you stay longer (€5 an hour after that) or take the €35 24-hour ticket, booked two hours ahead.
My rule: staying past lunch? Then the car doesn't belong in the centre.

Towed in Hamburg: Moved, or gone to Ausschläger Allee
1. Look along the street first
Hamburg often just moves a car to a nearby legal space, called Umsetzung: 6,135 times in the first half of 2025. That still costs €318.97 to €472.30. Walk round the block first.
2. Then think Rothenburgsort
Impounded cars go to the central car pound at Ausschläger Allee 179. The police page wouldn't open for me, so that address comes from directories. Any police station can tell you whether your car was towed. If you think it was stolen, ring 110.
3. Bring about €600
In July 2025 an impound cost €440.15 to €594.85. A towing firm lists €15 for each further 24 hours in the pound. One extra night on the top figure is about €610, before the €20–€40 parking fine.
4. Don't overstay at P+R
The P+R rules charge €30 per started 24 hours, up to €500, and allow towing or clamping.
Hamburg towed 16,606 cars in six months of 2025. I wouldn't test it.
If your car has disappeared
- Who took it
- Hamburg police order tows. Many cars are only moved to a nearby legal space (Umsetzung, 6,135 in the first half of 2025); the rest go to the central car pound in Rothenburgsort
- Phone
- Police emergency, if the car is gone and you think it was stolen: 110
- Collect it at
- Zentrale Fahrzeugverwahrstelle, Ausschläger Allee 179, 20539 Hamburg (address from directories; the police page blocked me). A second site at the airport (Terminal Tango) was also in use in 2025.
- Hours
- Not published in a source I could read; ring a police station first.
- What it costs
- July 2025 figures: moved to a nearby space €318.97–472.30; impounded €440.15–594.85. A towing firm's page lists storage at €15 for each further 24 hours. Parking without a ticket is €20–€40.
- Bring
- Nothing is listed for visitors in a source I could read. I'd bring my driving licence, passport, the registration or rental papers, and a card.
EV charging in Hamburg: 5,063 plugs and a free meter for E plates
1. Park free only with an E plate
After the May 2026 rise, electric cars still park free at the meter up to the maximum stay. A 2026 guide says that means a German E plate and a parking disc on show. I found nothing on how a foreign EV qualifies, so I'd pay.
2. Expect 59 cents, not a city price
The city-owned Hamburger Energiewerke charges €0.59 per kWh on AC and €0.69 on DC with its free Basis app tariff; roaming cards pay €0.65 and €0.75. Its ad-hoc card price isn't published. After 181 minutes on AC or 61 on DC it adds 5 cents a minute, capped at €18, but not between 20:00 and 09:00.
3. Charge in the garage you'd use anyway
The Elbphilharmonie garage has 15 charging spaces, Hanseviertel 10, City-Parkhaus 14. None publishes a price.
Hamburg had 5,063 public charge points in April 2026. Finding one is easy; the price is the surprise.
Where to charge
- Hamburger Energiewerke (city-owned network) — Public chargers across Hamburg; 5,063 public charge points in the city on 1 April 2026, 868 of them fast. Basis app tariff, no monthly fee: €0.59 per kWh AC, €0.69 DC; roaming cards €0.65 and €0.75. Blocking fee 5 cents a minute after 181 minutes AC or 61 DC, capped at €18, none 20:00–09:00. Ad-hoc price not published
- Elbphilharmonie garage — 15 spaces — Parkhaus Elbphilharmonie, open 24/7. APCOA publishes the number, not the price; you also pay €5.50 an hour to park
- Q-Park City-Parkhaus — 14 points — City-Parkhaus, Raboisen, near the main station. The most points I could confirm in a central garage; price not published
Free parking in Hamburg: Thirty-four P+R car parks at €2
1. Pay €2 at any official P+R
P+R-Betriebsgesellschaft charges €2 for 24 hours from purchase, or €4 a day for up to 15 days, at the machine by coin, card or phone. Overnight is fine within that. The train fare is not included, and you're meant to ride on.
2. Pick the site on your line
- U1: Berne, Fuhlsbüttel, Kiwittsmoor, Langenhorn Markt, Langenhorn Nord, Meiendorfer Weg, Ohlsdorf (also S1), Ohlstedt, Trabrennbahn, Volksdorf.
- U2: Hagenbecks Tierpark, Niendorf Markt, Steinfurther Allee; U2/U4: Horner Rennbahn.
- S1: Bahrenfeld, Hochkamp, Klein Flottbek, Poppenbüttel (two).
- S2/S7: Bergedorf (two), Mittlerer Landweg, Nettelnburg Nord, Ost and West.
- S3/S5: Elbgaustraße, Harburg, Neugraben, Neuwiedenthal (two), Veddel (two).
- RB81: Rahlstedt. AKN A1: Schnelsen.
3. Ignore the extra names in guides
Barmbek, Lattenkamp and Friedrichsberg turn up in parking guides. None is on the operator's own list of 34.
4. Do the sum before you drive in
€2 for P+R plus an AB day ticket at €8.20 (€7.63 in the app, per an independent fares site) is €10.20. A day at Hanseviertel is €50, so that's €39.80 saved per person. Veddel is my pick from the south: S3 or S5, about 8 minutes to the main station.
5. Park cheap on Sunday
Westfield Überseequartier is €1 an hour on Sundays until the end of October 2026. Q-Park City-Parkhaus sells a €3 Sunday ticket online. I found no Hamburg hotel whose own site promises free parking; Premier Inn Berliner Tor charges €29 a night.
Every price on this page was checked on 12 October 2026.

E-plate cars: free at the meter
Electric cars still park free up to the maximum stay after the May 2026 rise. A 2026 guide says you need a German E plate and a parking disc on show. I found nothing on how a foreign EV qualifies, so I'd pay.
Sunday: €1 an hour or €3 a day
Westfield Überseequartier charges €1 an hour on Sundays until the end of October 2026. Q-Park City-Parkhaus sells a €3 Sunday ticket online, 10:00–20:00.
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- Hamburg has no Umweltzone, and its two diesel-ban stretches (580 m of Max-Brauer-Allee and 1.6 km of Stresemannstraße for lorries) were lifted on 13 September 2023. Bremen, an hour away, does have one: carry the green sticker if you drive on.
- The May 2026 kerb rise is being rolled out machine by machine, and paper tickets are being replaced by entering your plate. Two meters on one street can show different prices for a few weeks.
- P+R weight rules disagree: the FAQ says 3.5 t on open lots and 2.5 t in garages, the 2020 rules say nothing over 2.8 t. Motorhomes, caravans and trailers are banned everywhere. I'd follow the lower figure.
- Guides still list P+R at Barmbek, Lattenkamp and Friedrichsberg. None of them is on the operator's own list of 34 sites on 12 October 2026.
- Don't drive at the Old Elbe Tunnel: it has been closed to motor vehicles since October 2023 (an unofficial site still lists cars on weekdays for €2). Walk it instead.
- Hamburg's own sites (hamburg.de, polizei.hamburg) refused automated reading on 12 October 2026, so the kerb prices and towing figures here come from news reports and operators.
