A rock in the middle of town and a 30-second lift
The Schlossberg stands inside the old town, and the lift Holding Graz runs up to the clock tower takes 30 seconds. The tower's long hand shows the hours and the short one the minutes, which locals point out before you ask. I start at the foot of the rock; most of this page lies within a few hundred metres of it.
A Styrian flag on the bottle
I do not buy pumpkin-seed oil because the label carries a Styrian flag. When the Austrian consumer magazine Konsument tested 30 oils in 2012, only 11 contained nothing but Austrian seeds, and some bottles bearing the g.g.A. protected mark failed too. That test is old, but my rule stands: look for the g.g.A. paper band with its control number, and buy it at the market below.
My second skip is planning an hour around the Murinsel. It is free and open all year, a 2003 platform in the river with an amphitheatre and a café. I cross it on the way between the Schlossberg and the old town and keep walking.
The Kaiser-Josef market, before one o'clock
The Kaiser-Josef-Markt sits directly behind the opera and runs Monday to Saturday, 06:00 to 13:00, closed on Sundays and public holidays. The tourist board calls it the largest farmers' market in Graz, with pumpkin-seed oil, Käferbohnen (Styrian beans), apples, farmhouse bread and smoked meats. I would buy one oil with the g.g.A. band and a bag of beans, then leave. The square is a blue zone with a 1.5-hour maximum, which is exactly one market visit.
Print the orange sticker before you leave home
In Graz the app alone is not enough. The city's mobile-parking page says to place the orange vignette, sent by your provider or printed, inside the windscreen. You then start the session with city code 002 plus the zone number: 001 for the blue zone, 002 for Lendplatz, Kaiser-Josef-Platz and Schlögelgasse, 003 for the main station, 005 for the green zone.
Four providers are licensed: EasyPark, Park and More, Parkster and Presto. Parkster says you print its vignette from its FAQ. No printer? The city's parking office hands them out free at Keesgasse 6, room 117, weekdays 08:00 to 12:30. The city says nothing about what happens without the sticker, and I would not test it.
A clock the wrong way round, a lift, a bowl and a Friendly Alien
The Uhrturm is the postcard, and the hands are not a mistake. A city-guide site says the hour hand was already four metres long when the minute hand arrived in 1712, so the newcomer had to be small.
The Schlossbergbahn opened in 1894. Single €3.30, return €6.10, any zone 101 ticket works. Since 1 October it runs from 10:00 to midnight, to 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The lift is €2.60 one way.
The Murinsel opened in 2003, when Graz was European Capital of Culture. Vito Acconci designed it, and entry is free.
The Kunsthaus is the Friendly Alien. Peter Cook and Colin Fournier designed it, also for 2003; Fournier compares it to a mixed-breed stray dog.
The Landeszeughaus holds around 32,000 pieces, billed as the largest preserved historic armoury in the world. From 1 November it is guided tours only, and it shuts on 24 and 25 December.
Schloss Eggenberg is the UNESCO palace, added in 2010, with over 500 ceiling paintings in the state rooms. Tram 1 or 7 gets you there in about 15 minutes.
Oil, beans and a courtyard from 1577
The dish to know is Käferbohnen, Styrian runner beans, with Kürbiskernöl, the dark pumpkin-seed oil, poured over. Its g.g.A. status dates from 1996, and the ministry says 2.5 to 3 kg of seeds make a litre. Add Backhendl, breaded fried chicken, and a glass of Schilcher, the sharp West Styrian rosé.
For lunch, Gasthaus Stainzerbauer says it has operated since 1577, open daily 11:00 to 24:00, kitchen 11:30 to 21:30. Landhauskeller claims over 400 years, open Monday to Saturday 12:00 to 01:00. I pick Stainzerbauer on a Sunday, because the Landhauskeller is shut.
Sixteen markets from 20 November, and a marathon
Advent runs 20 November to 24 December 2026 across 16 markets. Holding Graz lights Herrengasse on 19 November, and the ice nativity scene opens on 28 November. A Schlossberg market runs weekends to 20 December. I would park at Murpark and ride tram 4.
The Graz Marathon weekend is 9 to 11 October 2026 per graz.net, race day Sunday 11 October. Roads around the opera close Saturday 12:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 07:00 to 16:00. The tourist board's 10 to 11 September looks stale.
Aufsteirern, the Styrian folk festival, was 19 to 20 September 2026; the 2027 dates are not published.
