A 409-step tower, a war museum free on Tuesdays, a pier free till April
The Main Town is a walk from Okopowa or the Siedlce tram. Westerplatte and Sopot are the two trips where the car or a bus earns its keep.
1. Climb St Mary's 409 steps
The tower of St Mary's Church is 82 m, and the climb is 409 steps, the first stretch a tight spiral. It's sold as Europe's largest brick church; I'd climb for the roofs, not the record. It shuts in storms.
2. Walk Długi Targ, don't drive it
Długi Targ and Długa are permit-only for cars, which is the point. Start at the Golden Gate and walk to the river.
3. Give the Solidarity centre two hours
The permanent exhibition at the European Solidarity Centre fills seven rooms, and the centre says to allow about two hours. From October to April it's closed on Tuesdays.
4. See the war museum on a Tuesday
The Museum of the Second World War is free on Tuesdays, tickets at the desk, capped at 2,500 visitors. Other days it's 33 zł. Closed Mondays.
5. Take the bus to Westerplatte
The museum says the Westerplatte visitor centre car park is the only one left, and roadworks have closed part of Sucharskiego since February 2026. Buses 138 and 606 run from the main station. It's shut on 5–6 October 2026.
6. Walk Sopot pier free in winter
Sopot pier runs 511.5 m into the Baltic. Entry is free from 1 October 2026 to 9 April 2027, then 10 zł.
Milk-bar pierogi and a market hall reborn
1. Eat pierogi at a milk bar
Bar Mleczny Neptun is a cafeteria on the main street: tray, counter, pierogi, żurek sour rye soup. Order by pointing.
2. Graze at Hala Targowa
Hala Targowa reopened in August 2026 after restoration: 17 street-food counters on the ground floor, restaurants upstairs, and the remains of a 12th-century church in the basement. The ground floor opens 11:00–23:00, later on Friday and Saturday.
3. Order herring, then flounder
Herring in oil or cream is the starter; fried Baltic flounder is the main. Both are on most menus in the Main Town.
4. Taste Goldwasser, knowing it's German now
The herb liqueur with gold flakes is Gdańsk's best-known drink, but the regional tourist board says it's now imported from Germany. I'd try one glass for the story.
Christmas on Targ Węglowy, Dominic's Fair next summer
1. Park outside for the Christmas market
The market fills Targ Węglowy from 20 November to 23 December 2026, free entry. That's red-sector ground, charged every day.
2. Use the fair's P&R next summer
In 2026 the 766th St Dominic's Fair ran from 25 July to 16 August, and a P&R at Plac Zebrań Ludowych charged 25 zł for the car plus trams for five. The 2027 dates aren't out.
3. Plan around 11 November
Independence Day is a public holiday: red sector free, and the centre fills.
